Game sounds and game effects tuts (For game devs)

Write guides and how-tos about LMMS for other members.
Hello guys. :)
Alot of people on the Unity game engine forums and other game design forums
have trouble making sounds and effects for games. So I decided to make a new tutorial topic
that is dedicated to making, only game sounds and effects.

Some of these tuts, might look familiar, because they are from my Synth sound tutorials post
that can be found in this same Tutorials section. And in that post, I have all kinds of tuts.
And sometimes, finding the game sound tuts, might be hard to find.
So I'll copy those game sound/effects tuts and put them here, so it'll be easier to find.
I'll also be working on some new ones soon. I hope you guys have fun.

And the first one is below.
TABLE OF CONTENTS:

Okay. I'll work on this soon. :)
Okay. Here's the first one here guys.
We use Freeboy for this one. So enjoy!

Mario coin up sound.

Okay. First off, open Freeboys. :P
Image

-------------------------------------------------------------

Go to this section.
Image

Turn the left Vol in this section, to the full left until it hits 0.

Turn the second volume that's on the far right. To 0 also. This volume reduces the noise.

-------------------------------------------------------------

Now go to this section of Freeboy.
Image
Turn the:
SRS dial to 5
ST Time dial to 4

Oh, you see these arrows to the side
Image
Leave them as they are. :D

And that's that.

-------------------------------------------------------------

Press the Y key. You have just collected a Mario coin. 8-)
Press or hold, any other keyboard key. and you get, lots of different cool sounds.

-------------------------------------------------------------

Simple tip.
Image
Play around with the SRS and STime dials
and the arrows
Image
to make, all sorts of unusual, cool Gameboyish sounds.
-------------------------------------------------------------

Have fun in the land of the Mushroom Kingdom. 8-)
Build up Mario drop game sound.

This one uses Freeboy too.

Okay guys, it's back to making game sounds.
And today, we're using the good ol' Freeboy plugin again, for this tut.

1) First off, open up good ol' Freeboy plugin. :P
Image

-------------------------------------------------------------

2) Okay. Now go to the mid row section of Freeboy.
Image
Turn the:
SRS dial (aka The SweepRtShift amount)to 6

ST Time dial (aka Sweep time) to 5

Oh, you see these arrows to the side
Image
Leave them just as they are seen, in the pic. We're not going to interfere with those. :D

------------------------------------------------------------------

3) Now lets go to this section.
Image

Turn the Vol dial, located to the left hand side in this section, to the full left until it hits 0.
This volume dial, is called the Square Volume Channel 2.

Note: If you Hover your arrow cursor over it, and the name of the dial will appear.
You can do that for any other dial too.

Do you see the second volume dial, that's on the far right? That is the (noise volume).
Turn that Volume dial, to 0 or to any number of your choice also.
This volume reduces the noise, or adds
some noise to the sound, to give it an old school game vintage sound to it.
. :D

And that's the end, of our basic tut. :D

-------------------------------------------------------------

4) Press hold the Y key. Nice sound eh?
Press or hold, any other keyboard key of your choice. and you get, lots of different cool sounds.

-----------------------------------------------------------

Don't forget to check the Table of Contents, on Page 1. :D
Enjoy!! 8-)

Oh wait,.....this is page one. Ha! Ha!
Inside of a scary Ufo type sound :|

Okay. Today, we again use the Lmms' internal plugin, called sfxr to make the sound
of being inside a cartoony UFO. So lets make that game sound dudes. 8-)

1) Bring in sfxr into Lmms. :D
Image

--------------------------------------------------------

2) In the Wave Section we want to use the Sine wave. So choose the sine wave.
The sine wave as mentioned in the previous tut, is the 3rd shape. The one that looks like a sound wave.
Image

For more clarification, the sine wave, looks like the Synth 1 sine wave.
It looks like this. The sign with the red dot on the left of it. That's the sine wave.
Image
That's the one to choose, in the sfxr plugin.

--------------------------------------------------------

3) In the Env section (aka the Blue dials):
ATT (attack) raise it a bit, to 0.646

DEC (Decay) dial = Full right.
Image

---------------------------------------------------------

4) Now we go to the section with the green dials, called the Freq section.
Image
Turn the:

START dial = 0.215.

V.DEP = 0.28

V.SPD = 0.526

Note: (Turning the Freq sections, Start dial, gives you all sorts of different sounds.
And with different wave signs, in combination with the Start dial, you can make lots of sound possibilities.)
So don't be afraid, to turn that dial, and make all sorts of unique sounds. :)

And that's the end of our 2nd super duper super short sfxr tut. :D

---------------------------------------------------------

Now slightly press and hold some keys eg. the Y key.
It kinda sounds like a cartoon character entering a UFO, filled with alien tech, making lots of whirling noises. :o

Have fun with this one. And beware of the cartoony aliens.

Gasp! I think they saw me. RUN!!

Enjoy!! 8-)
Inside of a Scary Cartoony Ufo with Alien Tech type sound (Synth 1 version)

Okay guys, today we make that same UFO sound again, but this time, we use Synth 1.
Yep. Synth 1 is capable of making, these type of special effect sounds too.
But the trick to making this sound, is to use the LFO options in Synth 1. :geek:

This tut is for those, who prefer to make that same sound in Synth1, instead of sfxr. :)

So drag in Synth 1 into Lmms and here we go dudes. :D

1) Okay, first off, we open Synth 1 by dragging it, into Lmms and then, we select a default
Synth 1 soundbank.
Image

And like in all of the other synth 1 tuts, we take off and turn off, both LFO's etc.
In other words the numbers 1 and 2 and Tempo and Key button
must all be off, or not lit up, like in the pic shown.
Image

--------------------------------------------------

2) Now lets head to Osc1.
Lets choice the Ramp wave.
Image

--------------------------------

3) Now, we only want to use Osc 1.
So lets head over to the mix dial, and turn it full left.
Image

Turning it full left, will let us use Osc 1 only.

------------------------------------------------

4) Lets head to the Amplifier Section
Look for the dial called A. That's the Attack dial. So we are going to turn it.

A = 35
Image

----------------------------------

5) Now lets go to the Filter section.
Look for the Frq dial and the Sat dial.
Image

Frq = 81

Sat = 44

Then, go here, and select LP12
Image

------------------------------

6) Now for the fun part.
Lets go to the LFO section.
Image

Do you see the square button called 1.
Press it, to turn it on.
If it glows yellow means it is On.
Pressing that square button, lets us use the LFO 1 abilities.

--------------------------

7) Okay, do you see the words osc1,2?
Image

By default, it is already on. (Red in colour) like in the pic above.
If it's not on, press the circle to the Left of of the words, osc1,2 to turn it on

------------------------

8 ) Now, the trick to making the Ufo Ghostie wobble sound, are two dials.
spd and amt. If you play around with these two important dials, you can
create all sorts of cool special FX.

spd = 58

amt = 17

And that's that dudes.

-----------------

Press and hold the T key, or any other key, of your choice.
And you'll hear the cool UFO ghostie wobbly sound, that we made with
sfxr and nescaline, a few weeks ago.

I hope you guys had fun. Stay tuned for more tuts. :)
Inside of a Scary Cartoony Ufo with Alien Tech type sound
(Nescaline version)

Okay. So the last time we made this sound, we used Lmms' sfxr plugin and the Synth1 plugin.
This time, for Nescaline fans, we are going to make a similar sound, using the nescaline plugin. :D
But believe it or not, this tut is super short. Lol!
So here we go......

1) First off, lets drag in good 'ol Nescaline again. :D
Image

---------------------------------------------------

2) For this tut, we only want CH 3..... on.
Image
Take all of the other channels off. :)

---------------------------------------------------

3) Do you see the CRS dial? It's next to the VOL dial.
Image
Turn it to the following number.
CRS = -7

---------------------------------------------------

4) Now head to the Master part dudes. :D
And look for a dial called VIBR. Which means Vibrato.
Image

The Vibrato dial, is the same magical dial, we used, when we made this same sound, using the sfxr plugin.

VIBR = 4

And that's it guys. :D

--------------------------------------------------

Now Press hold, either the R or T or Y key, on your PC keyboard.
Yep. You have just made the same/similar Inside of a Scary Cartoony Ufo with Alien Tech type sound
using the Nescaline plugin.

If you want to try out the sfxr, or Synth1 version, check above. :)

I hope you guys enjoyed this tut.
And don't forget to check the Table of Contents, on page 1.
Well, this is page one. Lol!

Stay tuned, for more game sound and effects tuts.
Super Mario Ghost/UFO wobble sound.

Sfxr plugin.

Today, we make my 8 bit Mario Ghost/UFO wobble sound.
(A very simple fun super short tut) 8-)

This tut was specially made, because some new Lmms users, who want to make chiptune, or are making music for old school style video games, have trouble understanding the sfxr plugin and other Lmms' plugins similar to it.
So I hope you rookies enjoy this tut. :D

Note: I am not an sfxr Pro expert. Lol! :P

--------------------------------------------------------

Part 1
Today, we us Lmms' sfxr plugin for this.
So open it up.
Image

--------------------------------------------------------

Leave it on the default Square wave.
Image

--------------------------------------------------------

In the Env section (aka the Blue dials):
ATT (attack) raise a bit, or leave it as it is.
DEC (Decay) dial to 0.8 or a bit more, or less if you want.
Image

---------------------------------------------------------
In the Freq section (aka the Green dials) ;)
Image
START dial Leave it as it is, or raise it a tiny bit.

V.DEP. dial to 0.16

V.SPD. to 0.253 or, raise it to 0.276
Note: The more you raise the V.SPD. dial, the faster the wobble will sound.
Or, the more you turn V.SPD. to the right, the faster it pulsates.

Press and hold the Y key on your keyboard.
And that's the Cool yet scary Ghosty/UFO sound right there. 8-)
Good for Bowsers castle stage, in the Mario Bros. games. :D

Now Press and hold the U key or T key, or any other key.
And listen to the other sounds each key makes.

-----------------------------------------------------------

Part 2
Now, lets make it sound, a bit more scarier. :D

Go to the FX section
Image

And add a Calf Reverb to the sfxr.
Image

-----------------------------------------------------------

Lower the Decay time knob, by turning it to the left. 0.8 or lower is a good number.
We don't want too much Decay on this sound. :D

Raise the Wet Amount dial to 1.1 by turning it to the right, or slighty more if you want.

Dry Amount= Turn it Full left or almost full left.

Bass Cut = Turn it a good bit to the left direction.
Note: If you turn the Bass cut to the right, we'll lose the sound effect we are aiming for. :P
-------------------------------------------------------------
And now we're done. :)

Now press and hold the Y key.
GASP!!
Scary isn't it?

Now press and hold, any key.
Taa daa!

This Super Mario Ghost/UFO wobble sound, is good for Bowsers Scary castle stage filled with Boo's. Lol! :D
Feel free to use it for your game projects and chiptune music. :)

I hope you enjoyed this tut.
See you soon, with another cool one. 8-)

So don't be afraid, to turn that cool dial, and make all sorts of cool unique sounds. :)

And that's the end of our ridiculously short tut.. :D

---------------------------------------------------------

Now slightly press and hold some keys eg. the Y key.
It sounds like Mario, or some old school game character, jump swimming in water. 8-)

Have fun. And enjoy! 8-)

bunny hopping across the stage. :)

Have fun. And enjoy hopping to the end!! 8-)
