You could also try going back a couple of versions. I have lmms 0.4.14 and all the packages are there.
First of all, I made a beat/ bassline (we'll call it Beat/ Bassline 1)- it has drums and bass. I want to copy it because I want another version of the exact same drum beat with no bass- the song is going to start with just the drums, a couple measures in, the bass comes in, pretty straight-forward....
The sound problem will most likely be your audio output (in the settings).

Getting the right BPM I often add the sample as an instrument and match the BPM within LMMS.

Another thing I often do is load it up in audacity and slow down the tempo, to get all the notes a lot slower, as I can concentrate a lot more on the individual notes.

Are all those plugins listed in the Plugin browser, the plugins that I already have installed, or are they all the available effects. There seems to be a lot of effects and I'm not sure if they're the ones I have installed or not.

When I updated PPA via the terminal:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:dns/sound

sudo apt-get update

sudo apt-get install lmms

The next time I opened lmms it was on version 0.4.14
