Just tested this on my other computer and it's indeed fixed in LinuxMint-18.3 which uses Ubuntu 16.04 (Xenial) repos.
Upgrade your OS is unfortunately the way to fix this. Unfortunately Ubuntu is very reluctant to patch bugs in their stable releases so this will not be fixed on their side.

Does the demo projects export fine? Make a copy of the buggy project and remove one track at a time until you can export it. If there is a specific track that introduces the error you will find it this way. If you have effects in there you can then continue to remove one FX at a time until that trac...

They are saved as .xpf. I'm confused on how to open a preset though. Factory files work fine as they come up in the my presets folder, not my custom ones though.
They should show up after the factory presets and after you refresh the list (circular arrow button) or restart lmms.
