I discovered the problem!
Apparently, there was a single VST that made all the others crackle. It is really weird too since some of the VSTs affected were from the same author.

While trying to make a song, i noticed certain VST's make a crackling sound when played. It only happens to some of them. I have tried to lower the volume, change instrument (in the same VST), and lower the oscillator, all to no avail. I also exported the song and the crackling noise did carry over....
