at least on windows xp there are no real association between project-files and LMMS. Double-clicking on a project in a folder does open LMMS, but the content (instruments and midi-information) of the projectfile is not loaded.
LMMS opens empty as a 'new project'.

not even zynAddSubFX that is shipped with lmms can have any knobs bound to automation. Only the instruments 'default preset' interface-knobs can be automated.
