Afaik that feature does not work. But you can still get recorded samples into your project. You need to record the sample with something like audacity (freware). You can then either use the "Sample track" insert (meant for longer waves) or the "Audio File Processor" insert (for s...
alas, lmms does not have features for this.
You can however use fl-studio free version and resample a wavefile, this should then be used in lmms. But no native method exists in lmms. .. (yet? :)

Project | import <choose file>
Default the individual instruments will be empty, but in the setup you can link to a default soundfond that will populate all the instruments when a midi is imported.
