Sometimes control is needed on a much more granular level. An event list of note/control data gleaned directly from the project song file would be the most helpful - as nifty as the LMMS interface may be, it's a bit unwieldy at times (setting note volume, for instance). If there's already a way to access this data directly, it's not readily apparent in the documentation.

No there is not. I think you have an interesting idea. Data of this kind, could also bridge lmms-projects to third-party or own applications, like visualizers and perhaps event control systems (firework stage-effects aso)
..but
Something like this would be placed way down in the 'to-do' list, because it is very special, and only few regular users would benefit.
However
You could join the project, and do the coding!
That is how everything new get to be part of lmms.
