In the future, zynaddsubfx is releasing a version 3.0.0, as a VST plugin.

Would it be possible to remove the inbuilt zynaddsubfx (that is a few years outdated) and instead bundle the newer VST with LMMS (when it is released)?
Anything is possible :p - But really hard work is being done to embed the new zasfx in lmms.
In case you have not seen
I have already used the VST zasfx in this tutorial, in order to make it possible for those who have crashes, to use, edit, and make presets:

VST reliability varies between computers, plus, there's the Steinberg license to deal with as well. This is where things get, a-complicated.

Actually, the built-in Zyn has absolutely nothing to do with VST's. When Zyn 3.0 gets done there will probably be an initiative to integrate it into the LMMS codebase.

As for Steinberg license goes, there are no problems here. We use an reverse-engineered VST library that has nothing to do with Steinberg SDK, and as such its released as GPL v2 and can be included in LMMS without any legal issues. Though this approach and lack of debugging on windows is why currently the VST support is not as stable as it would be if we were using the Steinberg SDK.
Here, the official page: http://zynaddsubfx.sourceforge.net/zyn-fusion.html

Looks amazing!
NOTE: Zyn-Fusion interface will be open source by the end of 2017
I guess anytime now :D
Zyn fusion code is now opensource, so really want it! I think new guy of zasfx could help a lot of people to learn it faster because is more clear, really. :)
Embedding zasfx, especially with the new zyn-fusion interface is going to skyrocket lmms' popularity, really looking forward to this if the devs plan to do this.
