the intervals between notes are far more important than the key

I start almost everything off in C (all the white notes). and then when the timing and shape of the melody are about right I'll move it up or down to where I want it.

But that may just be me and I don't have anything like perfect pitch so the difference in sound between being in the key of say E (4 sharps) or F (1 flat) is not much at all.

Thanks for this anser saif sir.. btw i personally usse up and down keys to created sounds and lyrics when writing
Personally, I just find what note the melody starts on and then trial and error until I’ve translated it onto the piano how it sounds in my head. Eventually, you’ll have enough notes that you should be able to see which key it fits into, because generally your brain will automatically think of melodies in a regular key.

Maybe start by recording yourself humming or singing the melody you have in your head. Then you can just have it in your ear.
