West Coast Whistle/Funky Worm/Gangsta Whine Sound

Questions about producing? Ask them here.
Hi Everyone!

I'm new to music production, LMMS and this forum. Hope I'm not posting in wrong place :P
My overall goal is to learn music production aspects with LMMS and make switch to FL Studio (due to more features than LMMS).

Working on G-Funk beat I got stuck at the point which is cruicial - West Coast Whistle/Funky Worm/Gangsta Whine sound.
Did many hours of research and tried few plugins (Triple Oscillator and few VSTi), but still the sound cannot be recreated :(
My goal is to get as close to https://youtu.be/_qkP8SvHvaU?t=5s as possible.

Vids I used to try to replicate the sound:
https://youtu.be/tLHDsjuLtf4
https://youtu.be/HQzaD4S8zdY

Now, my question is: Can anybody literally tell me how to reproduce sound from above videos (using native LMMS plugins/free VST plugins)?

Please, excuse any spelling mistakes, etc. English is not my 1st language :)
Thank you in advance!

Personally, I think it's possible to sound similar to your reference track using only LMMS synths.

I do not have a recipe. You will need a lot of time to understand how synths work, to use it to synthesize what you want, to learn how to vibrate the speaker membranes thanks to LMMS (or other soft).

It would be useful to use VST visualization (oscilloscope, spectrometer, etc).
It allows to see what we do when the ears are not enough.

It would be useful to study your references in Audacity (or other software), to "see" how they sound.
This allows you for example to see the waveform of a kick, or its spectrum (usefull to learn).
Hello and welcome to the lmms forums SoundHunter. 8-)

Okay. The bass sound, could be a Tuba instrument/sound.
The same tuba instrument, used in jazz music.
My suggestion, is to look for a nice free tuba soundfont, on the internet.
Lmms' SF2 plugin plays soundfont files.

As for the whistle sound, it is possible to make that sound, in almost any synth plugin
but it'll take a while, to figure out though. :P

Hi Everyone!
Hi, Welcome to the forum !
Here are all important links:
http://lmms.io/forum/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=4740
-A few rules and useful forum instructions
My goal
I agree with prev posters, that whine is easy, but not with all lmms instruments, because there is a slide 'portamento' in it
Only zasfx and LB302 has that.

So the build:
Its mostly sine, i would think about ~80% + ~20 % saw, and it may have some fm-modulation, and given 'softness' with LP-filter, finally EQing to enhance high and depress low freq.

...and that meant nothing to you -right? :P
Best step fwd, is to learn all the lingo that goes with producing. Study videos of how to use all the settings in the UI's, and get familiar with lmms' capacity -cause lmms is not inferior to Fls :'p

Brandy has a lot of vids, where sound-effects are created.
I have some where i look at how to build instruments, and goes a bit deep into the functionality of filters and modulation (link in signature
Thx for the replies ppl! :)

Sound synthesis is still black magic for me :/ Well, at least now I know I have to learn it ASAP :P

Being perfectly honest I have no problem with terminology :P Trying to set everything as instructed... Completely different thing :(
Although I get the instruction, not being able to follow it, kinda makes it meaningless, so I agree with you musikbear.
I hope somebody more advanced than me can find it useful for his/her project :)

Regarding the inferiority of LMMS vs FLS, I do realize that LMMS is quite powerfull, but:
-Issues in MIDI import/export,
-Issues with stability when loading VSTs,
-Not being able to load the project which contains VSTis without workarounds,
-Lack of ability to record vocals,
-Not being able to stretch notes after drawing the really short ones.
It all adds up to LMMS' disadvantage. What I like about it:
-It's free & open-source,
-Very intuitive,
-Themes can be customized,
-It comes bundled with everything a beginner needs,
-It works :P
I'm definitely gonna keep LMMS even if I buy FLS.

Thanks again!

Lets 'fix' those :p
* Issues in MIDI import/export,
Here i would like to know what exact problem you have

- Issues with stability when loading VSTs
True, for a few. But it is ofcause sad, when one speciel cant be loaded

-Not being able to load the project which contains VSTis without workarounds,
I believe you mean, when you have used a VST that really cant work in lmms, then the project can have issues?
This is why you always should go through the 5 point test, with VSTs before you use it in a real project!
https://lmms.io/wiki/index.php?title=Wo ... t_VST_test

-Lack of ability to record vocals,
True!

-Not being able to stretch notes after drawing the really short ones.
Easy: Change magnification, then drag the note/ marked notes to any length
Only notes that cant be length-changed, are B&B no-length-notes, but they play the entire sample-sound, and meant to do just that.

About your whine- Toy could also install Synth1, and then browse the net for 'gangster-banks' for synth1
IMy guess.. There are 100'ths -scan downloads!
Idk if this

whats the preset for the "West Coast whistle"? I would really want to know how u did it.
I used zynAddSubFX /zasfx as the instrument.
Its really just some slightly detuned layers. Do you want the preset or a tutorial on how to make that kind of preset -You know "Fish v. Fishing"
