What's this instrument called and how do I recreate it?

Questions about producing? Ask them here.
Hello,

I would like to ask this specific instrument used in a song by Murdock: https://soundcloud.com/monstercat/murdo ... feat-veela

The first 20 seconds specifically (I think you'd call it the meleody?), then I'm guessing it loops but at a slightly higher octave. I'd like to ask what instrument is that and how can I recreate it in LMMS? I think I got the basic notes down using the TripleOscillator instrument and I'd like to make it at least sound similar.

I've haven't made any music before so I'm not 100% sure on the terminalogy. Going through a couple of youtube videos and slowly picking up certain things. Appreciate any help

Thanks!

Hello,
Hi, Welcome to the Forum icic !

-A few rules and useful forum instructions
what instrument is that and how can I recreate it in LMMS?
That is a soft square waveshape, and zynAddSubFX would be perfect for that!
The softness is enhanced with a almost closed Low-pass-filter, and it has a soft Attack
I've haven't made any music before so I'm not 100% sure on the terminalogy.
I have made several videos on ZynAddSubFX, and how to build presets, and use filters. It is not the simplest of instruments, but it may be the best!

Thank you for the reply. I'll have a look at the ZynAddSubFX video. A quick question with regards to apply low-pass filter; I'm guessing I apply the low pass filter from the FX option in the instrument, but there seems to be multiple ones i.e. GLAME butterworth, glame and One Pole. Is there any drastic differences between the filters?

well - zynAdSubFX has own filters, and they are of extremely high quality. You should use those!
There are differences between different filters. It is quite a lot of t&e, and also preference. One will give a 'distance' of the filtered sound, one perhaps more 'presence'..
Its actually a good question "differences in filtertypes" :)
