Headphones/earphones for mixing

Hello everyone,

I have been making songs with LMMS for a while now, but I'm still very inexperienced when it comes to mixing and mastering music. I have a couple of pairs of earphones and a pair of headphones and recently realised what may sound like an OK mix wearing one set may sound too thin or muddy wearing another.

Is there any technique to making a mix that sounds good regardless of the earphones/headphones you're wearing?

What do you recommend using in terms of earphones/headphones when mixing?

The best idea is to test it on different speakers, headphones, and earphones (to test sound qualities). However, some earphones and speakers have inherent colouring of noise so your sound may sound slightly different, and this is unavoidable. The only way to go around this, other than purchasing a sound device that a) doesn't colour your sound at all and b) plays all parts of the sound in absolute quality, is to try listening to your music on different devices and adjust minor details accordingly.

A trick I learned by myself, is when using okay level headphones, if the sounds you hear in it, sound a bit full, or all rounded in a sense, there is a possibility that you are mixing it correct.

Headphones are an integral part of every musician. From recording to mixing and mastering, you'll need a reliable pair to help you make important decisions, even if you already have studio monitors. But not all types of headphones are suitable for complex music production tasks. In fact, the features and design of the headphones you use are of great importance. Personally, I use closed-type headphones for this, because I can't afford the possibility of my sound leaking during vocal recording, for example.

Speakers and studio monitors are better for this task, and are safer for your ears. :)
