I recommend EasyQ (a very easy EQ), Ambience (awesome reverb), CMT Bitcrusher (very straightforward bitcrusher with overdrive, bit depth reduction, and downsampling), DBlue Glitch (really cool glitch effect sequencer), Camel Crusher (distortion, fat compressor, and lowpass filter), and FerricTDS (very straightforward and good sounding saturation).
Lots of people have mentioned Synth1, and I completely vouch for it, because it's easy to use but really, really, *serious face* really powerful.
Also, I haven't seen anyone mention TyrellN6 yet! It has a cool analogish sound and I really love using it for basses. Plus the chorus sounds really nice.
(P.S. all of these are free)
