KLF

Heres a throw back to the past, some of you may remember them, and if you dont, this will be an interesting Journey for you.

At the beginning of the 90’s, a group called the KLF (A.K.A the Timelords and the Jam), had a string of hit records, the following one was voted as best song of 1992,

They were invited to the brit awards which was the equivalent of the Grammy’s I suppose in America for England and to perform their song live before all the movers and shakers in the music business at that time.

This is their live performance,

They shocked the whole music business by announcing they were done with the music business and would never play again, fast forward two years and the KLF burn £1 million sterling witnessed by an independent journalist,

This generated a lot of anger and discontent with many many people……….. whats your first opinion/reaction to it?
When I hear KLF, first thing that comes to mind is this track:

I did not know they burned money. Wonder why they did it, but it was theirs I asume, so they could do as they like.

Could't care less. Their money, their choice. Stupid choice, but gave a lot of attention/ press
They were anarchistic in a lot things they did. They also made anti adverb where they told people NOT to buy their records, and for the most, they did whatever they knew/thought would annoy the record-business the most.
Were they any good..
Hmm..
It was later claimed, that they used hidden backing and mimed in concert, and they did nothing to reject that rumour, actually they were most likely the source ...
I remember they also made an announcement, that they KLF now was the 'ministry of music' or maybe it was rap.. icr .. , and that they offended almost every existing performer in UK at that time, with several outrageous 'statements' about their connections to the 'establishment'.
They were weird and wild. Sometimes thats good and creative, not always though
KLF' crazy attitude seams to me, to have been a businesses idea.
On their music, I will point you towards two things that may interest you, one of their previous names and their first number one hit,

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=an_Ajjhrl0k

That was 1988, now, after realising now that they had a number one before they were the KLF, you should see this,

Here is the manual written by the two guys before they were known as the KLF on how to get a number one hit, after reading this i guess you will think and feel differently about the music ‘Industry’,

Imho only a braindead zombie with cfd -who on top of that, had an egyption brain-removal done through their nose, would call that s**** music. It is h o r r i b l e

you should see this,
Omg a blatant ripoff of John Cleese - or Micheal Palin :P
On the other hand -If someone feel the need to be inspired, MontyPython is definitively a fantastic good choice!
In a way, this is a somewhat understandable fundament, for someone who later decides to burn a mio £. It performance theater, avant-garde! A happening or stunt, if you like, and maybe KLF should be understood as an artist community, like Warhol's The factory, where everything done, is a part of the complete artistic expression. Where Warhol used prints, KLF uses sound, but the 'art' is as much a pointing finger at the 'industry'
KLF says:
Look here -We take Dr-whos theme and mash it with Stadium-HI, spice it up with a silly video and that creates a number-one-hit?!? Shame on you!
Here is the manual
Great link! I did not read it though. I may get back to it later. No time right now -but Thanks!

Omg , a rip off of a number of Sweet ? , and the tv series tune.

In a way its brilliant. ( Commercial )

After googling.
I knew I recognized the intro, it is Sweet.

Sweet - Blockbuster
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y64211sjSko

But there is more originality, that intro first part.

Rock and Roll, Part 1 (1972) Gary Glitter at 0.20 its the same with different, lyrics.

You will have to read the manual, everything about the songs they made is following a formula that is designed to hit the top spot of the pop charts, they were playing the music industry at there own game.

Once you read the manual you will see that they were not intending to create a piece of meaningful music, they were hitting all the know 'Golden rules' (as they reveal in the book) to work a manufactured piece into number one.

Thats about the sum of it, when you read the book you will see they put on paper their exact journey through making that number one, and all the Tiers of people that are placed to earn off you as you get there, the Pop charts really are an industry, and if you learn the tricks of that trade you could very well make a number one, but after reading that journey, would you want to.

The thing about it is really, if you want to create music of substance, your credibility is somewhat going to be tarnished if you did make a Pop number one, as you will have to make some crap like that in order to do it.

Does this explain why they have hip hop records ( the seem to do the same with rock record though) were there are 1 or 2 more popular tunes, and then the rest is more strict to the genre?

For rock music, the ballet scores the hit, and is often the only ballet on the elpee / cd ?

I suppose there is that way of looking at it, makesure there is at least once track that 'Follows the golden rules', then have all your serious stuff on the album.

When you read the book and the part that explains the generally accepted 'Golden rules' in music to please the public and industry itself to make a number one, when you start to look around you see everywhere songs that were more or less constructed by those rules,

Smells like teen spirit - Nirvana
God save the queen - Sex Pistols
Another brick in the wall - Pink Floyd

Most of what we know and remember followed the rules, while some of them appearing to be very anti establishment and revolutionary, in the background were being driven according to known formula's that ensure recognition and 'singalong-ability'

Young man.. Do you ask for whooping!?!
how :p dare you compare anything from the golden hands of Floyd to the disorganized noise from KLF ??:p !?
Nae ABIW is not cut from the same stone. ABIW is part of a suite/ rock opera The Wall
A brilliant piece of work!
The industry saw that it was possible to use ABIW to get a top-hit, and it was released in many different versions, but only the way it is done in the suite, is the way Floyd intended it

Floyd are royaltee :p -actually more than that, sorry Elisabeth, you are not even close...
