General question about .ds files

Anything that doesn't fit into other topics goes here!
Hi everybody, this is not necessarily a support question, but more a question of curiosity. I'm always interested to get a better understanding of LMMS and how it functions, although I have no special knowledge about programming.

So I realized that most of the stock samples use the .ogg file format, except the folder "drumsynth" which is exclusively using .ds. I would like to learn more about the .ds file format and why it was chosen for the samples in the folder "drumsynth". Is .ds even a audio format comparable to .ogg or .wav? And what are the advantages of .ds? Many thanks in advance for your help!
Sure, check out http://mda.smartelectronix.com/drumsynth.htm (mirror)
.ds is the file extension of the drumsynth instrument application.
The same way ZynAddSubFX has xiz files because that is the default preset file format of the ZASFX app/vst, instead of xpf, drumsynth is comparable.
While AudioFileProcessor may not be able to work like the drumsynth instrument, it can read drumsynth presets, the .ds file format- they're technically audio files.
