:p well it does 2 things:
1) It amplifies the wave -That is actually not wanted...
2) It alter inclining of the wave. You can best see this effect in a spectrometer, if you play a pure sine,
Ofcause you see the expected soft sine-pattern
Now decrease the knee-value in the maximizer.
Gradually the soft sine, will morph into a square'ish shape.
The output is 'sharper', more 'present' and somewhat distorted too.
Can be used with hard-rock guitars, but also with sound-effects, where you want more 'harshness' / overdrive
