Music Production on Linux: how is it?

Good day everyone :)

I'm an university IT student - and a musician too - and I was wondering If I could start producing music with LMMS and Linux as OS.
Does anyone use this configuration? How is it? Are there enough plugins?

Have you got any advice for a newbie?

Anything could be helpful! :D

Thank you all in advance.

Yes you can
You should also install wine witch will allow you to use 1000'th of VSTs too
The LMMS you should install after you have installed the wine recommended for your linux, is this one:

the AppImage on the Linux-tab!

Running LMMS rc 7 on OpenSUSE (Linux) over here.

I have watched allot of vids of people producing music in any program.

A good start point is to watch all vids music bear made. I learned allot from those.

There are many more LMMS vids on you tube though.
Some of older lmms versions, but in general that does not matter much.

Thank you for your answers guys! :D

But I didn't understand yet if I have to virtualize a win version of LMMS to use more VSTs, or just the VSTs

Allot of the VST are windows VST.

That's why you want to install wine. So that you're Linux can handle the .dll files.

Wine, tricks programs into thinking they run on windows.

So you install wine and then download the Linux appimage file from the download link provided by musicbear.

After the download you make the appimage file executable, then you click it and LMMS should start. :)

So for Linux you use the Linux LMMS version.

Neither. After you have installed wine, you can use windows-VSTs in your Linux-LMMS.
So the procedure is:
* Install WINE for your specific LINUX distro
* Download our APP-Image
* Make APP-Image installable
* Install LMMS

Let us know the outcome :)

I am not really linux expert so i need to ask GPS:
( Did i forget anything Gus?

You said it right.

Although I don't really install LMMS, I just use the appimage file after making it executable.

I suspect the appimage file to make a LMMS folder and all, the first time you run it.

(That's why if you update to a newer LMMS version, you need to back up you're projects first.)
Just like on windows. :)

Ok, I see. But, what's the benefit of using the appimage instead of the normal lmms? :?

The App-image is cross-linux, and will work for all

I've installed the AppImage and I've run some free windows VSTs, it works wonderfully! :D
I just hope that bigger VSTs won't give me problems

Thank you all guys :!:
