Hi fellow humans on this forum :)

I don't know if this is the right place to post this but...

I made this, my first hip hop beat:
https://soundcloud.com/user-969609103/h ... -beatttttt

I'm looking to improve, so feedback would be very much appreciated.

Thanks guys x
Yop,

As roots dub aficionado, I love the sound of the bass. How did you make it? Sample, soundfont, synth?
The piano riff is simple and effective. The intro is well built.

A nice tune, congrats.

Hi!

I wasn't expecting anyone to reply tbh, let alone like it xD. Thanks for the feedback, it really helps. The bass is from this (free) sample pack: https://www.lucidsamples.com/free-sampl ... -pack.html

As for the track, what aspects would you improve?

I would be happy if I could compose such a hip hop track, so who am I to tell you how to improve it?
Maybe: add a refrain, with another bass line and another keyboard riff? It would certainly be more conventionnal, but it would allow you to add changes in the track and make it more complex, if complexity is a goal, of course.
It works well.

One way to improve your track is to think in terms of variations.

For example, for drums, you can clone your patterns, slightly modify the clones (moving or delete a kick, add a snare fill, etc.), and see when the clone works better than the original.

For the piano, at times, you can double the score of the piano with an instrument whose tone or timbre is a little different.

You can play with automations.

Well, I have no particular idea, but each element of your track can be subject to variations.

It sounds really nice dude. And it has a nice ring to it. :)

Hmmm....I think the 4 note shakey Tambourine?, type sound, heard at 1:35 secs
and a few places throughout the track, should be played a bit faster.
Because for some strange reason, it sounds as if those notes, are spaced a bit too far apart
from each other, in the piano roll.
Maybe, moving the notes closer to each other, in the piano roll, might do the trick.

Or maybe, it's the Tambourine sample, that sounds slowish. :)

Anyone who can listen to the music can make valuable suggestions imo :)

When you say refrain, do you mean like a chorus?

Thanks, I'll definitely try these ideas next time.

This is a rookie question but anyway....I looked up 'tone' and 'timbre' and I'm not really sure what the difference is. Does 'tone' refer to pitch and volume, whereas 'timbre' refers to the quality of the sound (as in, what instrument/synth it is)?

I didn't notice that, thanks for pointing it out. I shall investigate :p
