Also when using compression is it best to use it on individual instruments or on the master. I read that using it on both can over do it.
Okay: This is a tricky one.
The truth is, compression overall can be a really tricky thing.
Sometimes, using a lot of compressors, can literally make a good track sound dull.
As I told an lmms user a few weeks ago, when using mastering plugins,
"use less".
Try not to use too many of them. He was glad for that advice.
In your case, my suggestion, is to do some tests and see what happens from there.
But I will admit, having one on the
master and another/few on
individual instruments
can sometimes make a track sound good. And in other cases make the whole track sound dull.
So it's really how you use them too.
PS: Different compressor plugins, can sometimes give different results.
And compressors can strangely alter the way, your track sounds.
(Yeah I know, some musicians have talked about this strange phenomenon.)
