I just submitted a track for BOL6, finally going back and finishing something I had started over a year ago. Awhile back I had seen a video of "Rara" players on the streets in Haiti, and loved how they created those interlocking rhythmic melodies together even though most of the instruments can only play one note. I tried to make something that hints at that effect by using multiple tracks that each play one note, each independently panning around like a musician meandering through the crowd. Of course this goes off in its own direction, and this particular street party (or riot or whatever it is) takes place only in some imaginary land.
I keep coming back to 9EDO tuning (i.e. octave split evenly into 9 notes), and it seemed like the right scale for this - it has just the right amount of weirdness and danger, while also sounding musically convincing. You could say technically 9EDO is not "microtonal" because its steps are actually larger than semitones, but it certainly is a xenharmonic tuning.
