 ....thanks for that.

Voxengo SPAN is very useful, one of my songs i thought was well mixed and balanced turns out to be clipping all through it.

Another one i thought was average but needed more work has 0 clipping and never peaks beyond -0.6

May i ask some more advice?

While watching the graph during song playing i can see the curves and spikes etc related to certain frequencies.

Is this a good way to go about working on cleaning up a song,

By muting all high and middle frequencies for example first, then working with equalisers, compressors etc to try and separate and control the bass frequencies into their own appropriate space within the frequency ranges? And continue on in that way?

Yes ok, but a few clips should not worry you.
Also

Is this a good way to go about working on cleaning up a song,
is part of 'not worry'
Clipping can be great!
Some of the best effects does clip!
Clipping becomes an issue when it distort frequencies that should not be distorted, A.o. when one wave-signal overwhelms another.
Then you can search for a spike whit SPAN, and use a EQ to change one or several instruments.
At least, that my idea about it. You will find others with different ideas

Experiment and test on a copy i think is the best way forward, thanks.
