CPU in the RED wierd sounds hissing

Having trouble with LMMS? Ask about it here.

- I have uninstalled LMMS and deleted the user home directory under %USERPROFILE%\Documents\LMMS
- I have done a clean installation of LMMS 1.2.2 under the default location (C:\Program Files\LMMS)

Unfortunately, the CPU meter is still staying in the red :(
Also with the test-project \Greippi - Krem Kaakkuja (SecondFlight Remix).mmpz ?
Still overshooting into red?!
How does your CPU load look with lmms shut down
Have you checked that in Task Manager?

Correct, the CPU meter hits red when I open Greippi - Krem Kaakkuja (SecondFlight Remix).mmpz, but also when I do not (just launching LMMS).

The CPU load of my system is very low - hovers around 3% and nothing sticks out in the Power Manager. The PC is very, very powerful and does not have performance issues with any of the programs I use. I am wondering if there is some weird Windows quirk that tips off LMMS. I guess if I built it from source I could get some insights into it but building on Windows is notoriously hard (Qt is tricky).

strange..

Njee, because you have what so many others have, so a quirk should hit generally, the same goes for Qt
Have to look elsewhere ..

You have tried several LMMS versions, also test ver. 1.3
I wonder if your config somehow is conflicting.
I have written a 'cleaner' config, we can try that.
Here you first need to get rid of the current config
Follow this guide:
https://lmms.io/wiki/index.php?title=LM ... h_Settings
You did it once already -right?
This time however we will insert my cleaner.

After you have removed the file Copy the code-block below, exactly as it is, and insert it in an empty NOTEPAD.
You need notepad! Anything else wont work ! You CANT use MSWord or anything that make page-formatting!
USE NOTEPAD -Or ofcause any real coder-tool..
Here is the code

Code: Select all

<?xml version="1.0"?>
<!DOCTYPE lmms-config-file>
<lmms version="1.2.2">
  <app nomsgaftersetup="0" displaydbv="0" nommpz="1" configured="1"/>
  <audioportaudio backend="MME" device="Microsoft Sound Mapper - Input"/>
  <audiosdl device=""/>
  <mixer framesperaudiobuffer="6400" hqaudio="1" audiodev="SDL (Simple DirectMedia Layer)" mididev="WinMM MIDI"/>
  <recentfiles></recentfiles>
</lmms>
Copy this exactly as it is written here inside the code-box, and paste it into an empty file in NOTEPAD
Save the file as

C:\Users\<Username>\.lmmsrc.xml

The dot infront MUST be there! You can copy the string above and insert it as the command.

Then shut down your pc, completely -NOT sleep!!
Wait 2 mins, and reboot
load lmms
Let me know

Thank you! I replaced the config file but unfortunately, it didn't work - after changing the config and doing the complete power cycle, it's still showing CPU hitting red, just in LMMS.

Note that a few lines got automatically added to the config after I started LMMS:

Code: Select all

<paths defaultsf2="" artwork="data:/themes/default/" stkdir="data:/stk/rawwaves/" workingdir="" laddir="plugins/ladspa/" backgroundartwork="" vstdir="C:\Program Files/VstPlugins/" sf2dir="C:/Users/<Username>/Documents/lmms/samples/soundfonts/" gigdir="C:/Users/<Username>/Documents/lmms/samples/gig/"/>
  <recentfiles>
    <file path="data:/projects/templates/default.mpt"/>
  </recentfiles>
These make sense, of course.

Lets try something crazy..
I can see that you have a default template. If that somehow is flawed, and that stays 'in', even after you load a project, then the issue from the template would be 'inherited' in to the next file..
Thats a longshot.........

I have made a new file for you.
It just a project that has absolute no content. Lets try that as default.mpt

First find current default.mpt
Its in C:\Program Files\LMMS\data\projects\templates
As Administrator Rename it
Then insert this code in a notepad-file in
C:\Program Files\LMMS\data\projects\templates
, and name it default.mpt

shut down pc
reboot
fingers crossed
open lmms....

It unfortunately didn't help - after replacing the default template and power-cycling the machine, the CPU meter inside of LMMS is still in red. I am wondering if it has to do with my sound config... here is a dump from DxDiag:

That is some wild stuff..
You have 2 active soundcards + one disabled?
You also split sound and voice between the to active cards.

Code: Select all

 Default Sound Playback: No
 Default Voice Playback: Yes
Then theres the driver. Its from Driver Provider: Advanced Micro Devices. Is that the on that is recommended by AMD?
You could experiment with new drivers, but DO make reset-points, so you can make a complete fallback, if everything goes wrong.
I would start online, and ask in a AMD forum what driver is recommended for your card, then if something new is recommended, test it.
The split of default sound and voice, that is strange, but its also strange that you have drivers for 3 soundcards, have 2 active and one with no output. That is beyond me. You have some powerful HW, no doubt, but i would find a HW expert online and ask about that sound split. I cant help with that.

I think that's just it! The AMD sound device is completely bogus - it just comes with the video card drivers because of HDMI (both NVIDIA and AMD do that) but since I don't use HDMI (my monitors are connected via Display Port) I just disabled "AMD High Definition Audio Device" in Device Manager and it looks like it solved my problem!

The other audio devices are legit - one is my actual audio card, the other one is the webcam (it has a built-in mike).

I guess LMMS gets confused with too many audio devices present - now that I only have two, the CPU meter is half-way through, but since it's in the green, I don't care (note that turning the camera off doesn't further decrease it).

Thank you for sticking with me on this one - and for anyone else running into this issue, if you don't have any weird VSTs, do check you audio settings and see how many devices you have, modern video card manufacturers might sneak one on you that you didn't suspect :)

Wow! That pleases me a lot. I really thought it was not possible to get this one fixed 🎉
