VST plugins don't work on Linux

Having trouble with LMMS? Ask about it here.
Hey guys
I'm using Manjaro KDE (up to date) and the latest version of LMMS for a few weeks now and I want to use some VST plugins. I haven't found anyone with the same problem yet.

So I downloaded some VSTs and put them in the lmms/plugins/vst folder, some are working for linux others only for windows.
I dragged the VeSTige plugin into the song editor and chose the dll file from the folder.
The first time I did it, the wine configuration popped up and I clicked install for all the additional stuff.
After that, the VST sort of worked properly and played the default sound. But the problem is, that the
show/hide GUI button opens up just a blank window which does nothing. So now I can't change the sound in any way (except FX). After a few minutes, LMMS freezes and after force stopping it, it leaves an open window on my desktop where the VST controller should have been and I have to kill it over the console as it won't close.

I'm not sure if a plugin which is labeled for Linux also uses wine. If so, it could be a problem with the wine configuration. I don't think it's a problem by the VSTs themselfes as I used different websites for getting them. If any more information is needed just ask.
Any ideas what causes the problem or how to solve it?
Thanks in advance!
You need to install wine. :)

problem: the show/hide GUI button opens up just a blank window
How can i change the sound in any way
Well you actually do not need the VST-UI in order to work with the VST.
LMMS has its own Array of VSTs controllers.
You can open that with the wrench-button on the Preset-Window, right below the green folder-button :

-That said, of cause your VST-UI should work too.

Well, i do :) It sounds like you be chance have a couple of VSTs that does not works properly, but that can be tested!
Download
MDA-Piano http://mda.smartelectronix.com/synths.htm
It is very small in size, and you can just copy its dll to your VST-folder. Further its a quite good piano-instrument, so it is a win win.

I also want to have confirmation on
latest version of LMMS
Latest for Linux is this one AppImage 1.2.1:
https://lmms.io/download/#linux
Is that the one you mean by 'latest' ?
Let us know the outcome :)
Vestige is only for windows vst (.dll files)

For Linux plugins you probably need Carla. I had no luck yet with getting that to work 100% right in lmms though.

That gui freezing might be a problem I have too.

Does this sound familiar ?

Hi, Welcome to the Forum sebgrae !
Thank you for the reply :)

So apparently I wasn't using the latest version after all, I had 1.2.0-3 installed, Octopi doesn't have a newer version so I figured 1.2.0 would be the newest. Anyway, now I use AppImage 1.2.1 as you told me, thanks for that.

I downloaded MDA-piano and its working great, using the controllers opening up on the wrench button, additionally I downloaded TranceDrive and Scorpius from http://www.vstplanet.com/Instruments/V ... izers.htm to test it and it is also working with the wrench thing.
But if I load a dll file into VeSTige (also the MDA-piano), it still opens up a blank window, which fortunately isn't crashing lmms anymore. But still, it should be the on board controller of the vst instrument, shouldn't it?
LMMS has its own Array of VSTs controllers.
Or is this the alternative for it?

Other than that I'm quite happy with the outcome, thank's again :)

Yes I think I had the same problem, lmms was not responding and the track kept on playing. Though I installed the newest version of lmms and luckily it doesn't happen anymore.

That is ..odd. Im not sure i understand it, because it could be a 'linux-thing' but is the failing procedure this:
You:
* Click on the green folder-icon
* A file-dialog opens
* browse to o VST-dll
* selects it with left-click

And that opens an empty window -No VST-UI?

Yes, thats pretty much how it is.
'linux-thing'
So yeah, maybe wine has some problems, I can't really go deep into that as I started with linux just a few months ago.
I'm pretty clueless too

:| .. oke.. heres a really dumb idea.. Could your lost UI be way out to the right -outside screen..
I seriously doubt it, but try and scroll...
It appears that I am having this problem on the latest version of lmms

Code: Select all

1.2.2
wine says

Code: Select all

wine-5.0.3 (Ubuntu 5.0.3-3)
i installed it 5 minutes ago after an

Code: Select all

apt update
.

I can hear notes when i play them and it looks like the wrench opens a lmms style menu for some of my VSTs.

I do see a white border on the left side of the blank window tho.
