Not New: lmms VeSTige does not load vst dll's

Having trouble with LMMS? Ask about it here.
As I promised in my "i am the new guy" thread,
lmms VeStige does not load any vst dll.
See also viewtopic.php?f=7&t=33706

I tried the mdapiano, it does not open. (error message)
I tried synth1, it does not open (error message)
(BTW the link to Syth1 in the lmms wiki does not work. I downloaded it from somewhere else)

I run lmms 1.1.3 in Linux Mint 19

Oh yes, there is an error message:
"Das VST-Plugin /home/somewho/lmms/samples/mda Piano.dll konnte aus irgendeinem Grund nicht geladen werden.
Wenn es mit anderer VST-software unter Linux funktioniert, kontaktieren Sie bitte einen LMMS-Entwickler!"
"The vst plugin ... could not be loaded by some reason or other. If it works with different vst sw within linux then contact lmms programmers"

I have current wine installed.
lmms is freshly installed und routed to my local vst path

I'm out of ideas.
First get a newer version of LMMS. :)

So talk to the package builder for mint and or the Mint forum, or go to this download page.

https://lmms.io/download#linux

Download the file, set rights to executable, and then double click to to file to start LMMS.

The LMMS developers made this because about every distro around has issues with compiling LMMS right.

This topic proofs it , again. ;)

Yeah, you 're correct.
I downloaded the appimage, thatworks (partially)
mdapiano and synth1 now load and can generate sound.
Empty GUI frame for both of them, so no tweaking possible.

Imperfect VST does not load
Kilohearts One VST does not load
FBM FB-3100 VSt loads has 64 presets, no GUI
I suspect a problem with wine, but I use openSUSE, so I have no idea on how to fix this on Mint. :(

Did you install wine 32 bit ?

There is also a 64 bit version, but that one is not really finished yet.

I think you have two options, go tot the mint forum and explain the problem.
Or the Linux musician forum. Somebody should know what the right wine package is, that you need to install.

VSTs & Linux

This guide is for usage of Windows-build VSTs, used on LINUX through WINE!
First thing to know, is that you can only use 32 bits VSTs!
There is no support for 64 bits VST!
Do not download those.

You need to install WINE before you install LMMS' AppImage for Linux
The best way to install WINE is through the package manager.

After you have done that, you install the newest AppImage from LMMS Linux download-site, and only from that site!
https://lmms.io/download/#linux
the first time you start LMMS through the Appimage file, Wine may ask you to install some upgrade! Accept all WINE upgrades!
After installation, you go into Edit| Settings| Misc -Here DisableSync VST plugins to host playback. This works best for Linux.
Problems with WINE

So we said : "To get VSTs working on LMMS, you need Wine."

The issue is, sometimes Wine doesn't work! Our User Douglas writes here how he managed to solve this for Debian:

"After struggling with this for a bit (only three years), I finally figured it out. At first I thought that it was an issue with LMMS and Debian, but it turns out it was an issue with Wine! Here are the steps I took to fix it:

1. Uninstall Wine

2. Go to https://wine-staging.com/installation.html

3. Follow the instructions for installing the wine-staging package
3b Install wine-staging, wine-staging-amd64, and winehq-staging

4. It should be done, assuming I didn't forget anything... simply run LMMS (make sure you have lmms-vst-full 1.1.3 from KXStudio), and VSTs should be working now!

I don't know if this is important (it probably isn't), but I still have wine64 installed. I doubt that it is required, but it is possible.

If you use a different Linux than Debian, and you have had WINE problems, but this guide also help you, then we would very much like to know about it, on the forum!
You might have to install wine mono, although if everything works fine, wine will do this for you the first time you use LMMS.
On openSUSE I always get a pop up the first time I use a VST in LMMS, wine then asks me if I want to install wine mono.
It also should do some first time use set up.
The mesage is something about wine setting things up.

After this the project loads, but with an error about it not being able to use vst.
Don't save the project, but exit LMMS. Then restart LMMS and everything should be fine. :)
