Many schools are now adding skateboarding into their curriculums as one of the optional subjects to teach. The main profit of this sport is to connect people from different classes of society but having the same interest in skateboarding. A typical successful initiative is Skatistan which is a non-profit organization. The main purpose of this organization is to empower youth in developing countries through skateboarding and other educational activities.

ATTITUDE TOWARD SKATEBOARDING

It is obvious that not all people in cities are comfortable with skaters on the streets, and it is impossible to please everyone since skateboarding remains a controversial activity. However, the most important issue these days is to find suitable times and places for skateboarding.

The aim of blending skateboarding into urban areas seems to be unrealistic; therefore, authorities have been working to find better solutions for this problem. In the meantime, building more and more skateparks would be the perfect idea to encourage skaters to involve in skating in safe areas.

The main reason which makes residents in urban spaces dislike skateboarding is that it can cause destruction to their properties and unusually be noisy. Also, without careful observation, skaters tend to hurt themselves and other pedestrians.

Deterring skateboarding and other activities with hostile architecture is the most common method used by many cities all over the world. This attempt tries to create special places for a particular group of citizens like homeless people, etc. however, this method is strongly criticized because it promotes a less connected community and increases the tensions between classes. Finally, this action is considered to be imperfect since it only combats the symptoms not the root causes of the issues.

In skateboarding, only with good management of traffic and building products, the sport can take place in suitable parts of the city. Unlike other sports, skateboarding demands hybrid and dynamic spaces which can be blended into urban futuristic plans.

Good examples of creating multi-purpose spaces are Malmo, Copenhagen, London, Paris, and Los Angeles. Especially Malmo and Copenhagen, they have official “skateboard coordinators” to guide skaters to proper skating spaces among the cities’ infrastructure. SKATEBOARDING CONFLICT IN CITIES

While the problem of finding suitable areas for skating has been solved, and an arising issue is how to avoid conflict in this sport. A good multi-purpose space is ideal for skateboarding and other activities; however, due to the variety of use, conflicts can happen among people in these areas or between them and people on the streets.

Therefore, it is better if the city can build up bollards to create visual barriers to separate the skateboarding areas and the pedestrian or vehicle traffic. Also, easily detectable warning plates should be placed to alert those who are about to enter dangerous spaces.

The most successful area in this field must be Rue Leon Cladel Alley Skatepark in Paris which clearly defines places for skateboarding but doesn't restrict other vehicles. Moreover, cities should invest in using proper materials like steel or granite to ensure a long-lasting place.

CONCLUSION

As urbanization develops, more and more issues can appear not only with skateboarding but also with other street sports. Therefore, arthritis must have a long-term solution to overcome any scenario which may happen in the near future. However, the most important thing is that people should accept these street sports as a part of urban life and propose potential ideas for improving the situation.
