Re: Weird Fluctuating Up and Down Sound

Having trouble with LMMS? Ask about it here.
Hi,

I have just finished a track using a few samples (wav files) as well as some beats using Bass-line Editor.

When listening to the track in LMMS it sounds great and all the levels on each clip are about right. I have exported the song as a wav file and when I replay the track through as decent sound system, I get almost continuous rise and fall in sound which is really weird as you don't hear it on the original. I've muted various tracks in the song editor to see which clip is causing the problem, and it appears to be one of my .wav samples. Like I say this is weird because if I play the clip in isolation in any music player (like Audacity for example) on my laptop the sound doesn't fluctuate.

One thing I have noticed when playing back in Audacity, is that the L/R volume levels are pushing way above -6 on the scale.

Any helpful suggestions to try would be great.

Excellent methodology!

Great find!
First i have to recommend you for your excellent dissection of this problem!
What i think might be going on, is that the sample, you have isolated, forces the volume up as it is initiated, but then the overall volume press the volume down again, as the sample terminates, i cant however explain why this only happens in the export 8|

You could try to insert a look-a-head-limiter on the clip-sample, and see if that helps, but I think the best way to go, is to use Audacity, to lower the vol in that specific sample, to a non-clipping value.

What LMMS are you using? And on witch OS
Hi Musikbear,

I'm using LMMS 1.1.3 and Windows 10.

I guess I could try and normalise the track in Audacity to see if that makes any difference.

Ok, then you must update!
*Back-up your own stuff
*Un-install current installation
*(re)move the config dot-file

*download a fresh new installation-pack either x32 or x64 of
LMMS 1.2.0 RC7 Orange buttons!

Linux-users need the AppImage on the Linux-tab!
https://github.com/LMMS/lmms/releases/d ... 4.AppImage
*re-install as administrator and grant all users access

That is not a good idea. If you normalize a complete track, you will also normalize the noise, and the track will be horrible, but do update1 i would not be surprised, if that takes care of the problem. win10 does not like 1.1.3
One small remark about Linux: After the download set the appimage file to be executable.
(Just as a normal user)
Hi Musikbear,

Thanks for your help. I followed your instructions and installed the latest version.

I normalised the sample which I believed was causing the issue to -6dB and exported the song again and the fluctuation has disappeared, which is great.

I'm still having a few minor issues with volumes but I guess that's just trial and error.
I'm using a laptop with headphones as I can't blast the sound at home...they'd kill me ;) I get the levels right on playback in LMMS, but then when the track is played louder on my music system (once everyone has gone out!) I realise that it needs tweaking.

I love the addition of exporting a track as an mp3...perfect for the car.

Cheers.
