Oh, I forgot to mention this, in my long explanation post.
Sometimes in my case, the sound of the cool sounding Synth sound, helps me see a whole new melody, using that synth sound.
Then I start to create that melody, in the piano roll, and make more variations.
Sometimes it's just the press of a key, or playing around with the keys for a few secs and hearing the sounds, causes it.
And from there,.........it's up to my, or your imagination(s).
