Guide on Installing .patch files?

Having trouble with LMMS? Ask about it here.
Hey there,

I had been having some problems working with vst plugins in LMMS 0.4.13 (we all know that feeling), and while browsing the site I found and downloaded a few patches that seem to solve the exact problems I am having.
However, I have never encountered a .patch file before, and I do not know how to use it properly. There are many patches listed on this site, but nowhere could I find a guide on how to use them

I spent a good amount of time searching around the web on how to do this, and only came back even more confused trying to sort through all of the complicated tech language. I am a Windows 7 64bit user, and from what little information I could gather, it seems that .patch files are either not native to Windows or can only be run by a thrid-party program. I also gathered that you would need to execute some sort of command-line sequence or programming code in said third-party program, but it was all very confusing for me.

Is it possible for someone to walk me through this process?
A) I would be forever grateful to have LMMS working more smoothly with these patches.
B) Knowing how to do this could be quite useful in the future.

For the sake of clarity & preciseness, let's assume I'm the technologically challenged grandparent here. In reality, I have some very basic programming knowledge, but I want to make sure I don't miss anything. If someone could spell out step-by-step how to use these .patch files, I would greatly appreciate it.

Thank you!

exactly - .patch is for ubuntu-linux. You can not 'patche' windows.
However some specific VSTs has specific files that they call 'patch' -whitch has -nothing- to do with OS patching, but are in fact just banks.
The Service-pack(s) that has been released for various versions of windows, can be considered as 'windows-patches' -but thats a very different ballgame from the kind of wildfire often un-surported .patch files for linux

Maybe I wasn't quite clear enough, I'll say what I know.
I do understand what a "patch" for a vst is. I use many different soundbanks for various vst instruments, and I have no problems using those. I also understand that Windows has various service packs which are basically fixes to bugs in the operating system, or "patches" as some call them. However, I am not trying to "patch" the OS, nor am I trying to install a new soundbank.

My main goal: To fix the VST Problems in the Windows 64 bit version of LMMS. This would involve "patching" LMMS itself (as I understand it).
This:
http://sourceforge.net/tracker/?func=de ... tid=640436
apparently has fixed many of those problems. It is a patch I would like to have.
I understand that this is a .patch file, and that it is meant for a Linux OS, along with the Linux version of LMMS.

However, I have read around the internet that there are ways to "apply" patch files -in Windows- by using a third-party program. For example, This article:
http://www.hanselman.com/blog/UsingAWin ... Files.aspx
While still confusing for a person with limited programming experience (Some introductory Python and Matlab), I get the general idea.

My questions:
1. Foremost, is the above method (or one similar) possible? In other words, is there a way to successfully apply a patch file (using a program or otherwise) in Windows?
2. If yes, will this specific patch also fix the Windows version of LMMS? Or, because of the difference in operating systems (and, I assume, how their respective versions of LMMS are programmed), would it not patch correctly and/or damage LMMS?
3. If both of the previous answers are yes, I refer to my previous post. Would someone kindly provide a walkthrough in Layman's terms on how to do this?

Yet, I also understand that applying this patch in Windows may simply not be possible. So,

4. If I cannot apply the patch, is there a Windows-specific fix for these vst problems floating around somewhere? If so, could someone link me to it and/or give me instruction on how to fix it?

It's awesome that you guys are willing to help, and I really appreciate it! Again, Thank You.
I think you know this, but I am going to say it anyway. Your first link are a patch for LMMS posted on the tracker and therefore a new feature/bug-fix which will merged into LMMS in the next versions. Unless you are a developer or have knowledge about how programs are build, I wouldn´t bother to merge the patch myself ;)

On the other hand there probably exists tutorials on what to do with the patches, and it would be nice having someone to test the patch out. Like most patches, there probably is more bugs to be found.
