Problem with Piano Roll

Having trouble with LMMS? Ask about it here.
Just installed the LMMS 1.0.3 on my Windows 8 laptop. I can't write notes on the piano roll and the keys on the piano roll don't play. I try to left click and right click but no pattern is drawn on the piano roll. It is my first time using LMMS, is there some setting I need to do before I can write notes on the piano roll or play its keys?
Are you in the piano roll with no pattern selected? If so, you'll need to open the piano roll by double clicking the timeline for an instrument.
eg doubleclick here in this new block Image
and open a new piano-roll
I also recommend the wiki:

If you still have issues, dont hesitate to ask

Yes, as the others have said, there is a big green message telling you what to do. :)

By default, the piano roll doesn't select a track, one has to be selected. I'll file a bug against this because it can be confusing for newcomers.

Update: Opened bug report here: https://github.com/LMMS/lmms/issues/1132

I am glad this has already been addressed. I just downloaded lmms on Debian 8 and i am having the same problem. so basically its unuseable. i created an account just so i could reply to this.
Surely it's not unusable ? You just have to use it correctly. First select an instrument track in the Song Editor THEN open the piano roll by double clicking a block in the Song Editor and it all works, doesn't it ?

8O unuseable? then you wont need these all important links:
http://lmms.io/forum/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=4740 i suppose..

But in case you change mind Welcome to the forum Jason Bates!
So why is LMMS working in this way?

"Here we are with 5 tracks on the song-editor. Now i want to open piano-roll, so i click it and i just get that dumb message.."

Well ask your self:
"WHAT piano-roll should open??"
There are 5 tracks..
So the answer could be "The one that has focus, ofcause"
Well ask your self:
" In WHICH piano-roll position?"
See?
Both these need to be known, and that why the work-flow is:
* Point to a position in song-editor
* Mark it
As the position-block changes its shading,
* double-click it
Hey presto! LMMS open a piano-editor for that track, the that song-editor position!
Not 'unuseable' just a different logic, and not a bad one, imo

So finally; What is the purpose of the button, then?!
The button is there to toggle an existing piano-roll up and down! Try it! -You will get the hang of it very fast
