Are free VST's totally free?

Anything that doesn't fit into other topics goes here!
I mean, there are plenty of free vst's on the internet. You can use them for free.

BUT, are the sounds that they create free for commercial use? Can you make a commercial song using free vst's? Or are they free just for personal use?

For example, the http://www.dskmusic.com states clearly:
DSK Music Virtual Instruments are 100% free for private and commercial use
What about those who do not state that?
Generally speaking, it all comes down to the user agreement. If you can't find one, but the VST is free, then you'll more than likely never run into legal problems. It is very difficult to prove that someone used a particular VST unless they used its default patches, or the VST is something like dBlue_Glitch (a very distinct sound, thankfully completely free for all use :))
So I generally need to look for license agreement, or else I should be very careful.

Where did you get it's L.A.? I cant find it here: http://illformed.org/plugins/

There is where you can get the original Glitch, when it was free. Here is the included disclaimer:

A collection of old VST plug-ins by Kieran Foster, aka dblue, aka illformed.

All plugins are 32-bit VST for Windows only.

These plugins are completely unsupported by me, and are provided to you
purely for backup purposes, or for the sake of curiosity.

They are very outdated, they definitely contain some bugs, and they may even
crash your host without warning! If you don't like the sound of that, then
simply avoid using these plugins. I take no responsibility for any damage
they may cause to your system. You have been warned!

USE THESE PLUGINS AT YOUR OWN RISK!

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
As you can see, there is nothing other than a "Use at own risk!" In most cases of software, this means that you can do what you want as long as you don't try to blame the creator for any damages the software may cause. It's pretty common for things released for free. The rundown is that he is working on his paid VST, Glitch 2, and could care less about the old Glitch.
Thanks a lot! Great info for me!

Yup, the world is a hell of licencing, because money.
@epiNoesis
If you want to be on the safe side.
You could Stick with DSK Musics Vst's and Synth 1. :D
And any other Vst, that you know is safe to use for commercial use, without any hidden catches to it. :D

Also, Dsk Musics Vst's cover a whole wide range of musical instruments and sounds etc.
So, in a certain sense, you don't have to look elsewhere, for sounds and instruments. :D
But you can look elsewhere if you want too. :D

Synth 1 is super cool and safe too. :D
Oh,..................I almost forgot to mention.
Dsk Music has recently stated on Facebook, that he/they are planning to make new Vst's etc.
I can't wait!
Yippee!!
May I suggest we make a topic (list) of free for commercial use vsts? Or convert this topic into that?

Honestly do not think that is neccesary. I cant5 remember i ever saw a vst, that had a clause regarding its usage. A list of such bogus-free vst would be more apt, but i think it would be empty.

A list of tested and working vsts does exists, but i will first link to the chapter for using vsts, because i wrote a headsup paragraph about what tested & working should mean
https://lmms.io/wiki/index.php?title=1. ... d_problems
-and here
https://lmms.io/wiki/index.php?title=Tested_VSTs
are the tested vsts
They however not all pass the 5 tests adviced in first link. :/
The list is also old, so some may have been working i 0.x serie, but not in 1.x
Or in short : The list is messy, and not kept ajour.
So you better test your self,,
