Ever feel like effort =/= how popular your song gets?

Anything that doesn't fit into other topics goes here!
I noticed that the two songs I put the absolute least amount of effort into on Youtube turned out being the most popular ones I've ever done. They're sitting pretty at 1.1k views while my other stuff stays at 200-400 :|

It's a bit disheartening and discouraging I guess

Or you could try to understand what it is in the music that makes it stand out, and perhaps ask what it is that is appreciated.
I have that feeling most of the times.

One thing I have noticed, allot depends on what kind of music you make, and what people like at the moment.

I remember this forum getting allot of trap related questions.

Lets say the changes of me trying to make trap music is minimal. :P

Asking your public is probably the best way, like musikbear suggested.
That reminds me so much of what Crazybloodmonkey said on youtube.
He put up a game vid with bad editting and it got lots and lots of views. But the videos he made after that, that he spent alot of time, hours and effort editting them, to make them look professional, got way way less views. He even mentioned that after that, he got discouraged from the whole youtube thing for a while, because of it. :P

Thankls for the greeting! I actually used to be really active on here but on a different account (something like skyeyemccix if i recall right)
It's usually true that the songs you don't take seriously, become the most popular. Because popular music is easy to make, you just have to follow some rules and it's like a template.
If you put a lot of effort in a song, what you actually do is customizing it to be perfect for your own taste. But of course this makes it much less generic and thus much less popular.
I recently made a track out of boredom and I made it the most shitty most EDMy generic crap I could imagine. And you know what? That became one of my most popular tracks.
So yeah, making popular music is easy, what's not easy is to make it popular and good at the same time.
As a example how bad popular music can get.

Don't ask me how this ever became a small hit. Made as a joke.
