Looking to learn music but I want a keyboard/piano

Anything that doesn't fit into other topics goes here!
Should I buy one of those pianos/keyboards or whatever they are that you can hookup to your computer and learn to play piano/keyboard? I noticed people making beats and they had one of those and I also noticed in the triple oscillator of LMMS theres a record function where you can record keys from an external device. Also, I read a review of the complete idiots guide to music composition and they recommend you play an instrument. If make music I wanna go all the way so anymore suggestions would help.

I got nothing but time so i can do my own songs and I think it would be enjoyable.

I would definitely recommend a MIDI keyboard. It can make your music creation process more fun and interesting. Of course you can just use the keys on your computer keyboard, but they don't feel the same.

Thanks. Which number of keys should I get? I notice they have different number of keys.

There has been some discussion about this. See these topics:

Hello, m0rr0ws0n.
As you, I started to make music with keyboard. (I had guitar from 6 years old. But on guitar i could not to make any little melody.) When I bought a keyboard, i could make little melodies, sometimes with fake notes, but already a nice melodies.
My first keyboard was a Casio LK-215 synthesizer with 61 key. Then I started to go to tutor. For some etudes and some professional virtual instruments with key-switches (like sampled guitars) 61 key was not enough, but generally, 61 key was quite enough. Then I sold 61-key synthesizerand bought midi-keyboard with 88 keys. 88 keys is fully-enough for me.
Sometimes I take keyboard with 49 keys from my neighbor. As in case with a synthesizer with 61 keys, generally 49 keys is quit enough (for simply beat, for example), but to play large piano parts and play sampled instruments with key-switches is not comfort.
My keyboard is called: M-Audio Keystation 88es. (http://www.amazon.com/M-Audio-Keystatio ... i+keyboard)
I like to agree with all above. I never really learned to play an instrument, and that is a big disadvantage. If you're like me just wont give up though, there are enough great people here to help you, but I had to learn allot more then just how to use lmms.

You don't have to be a good player though, not with a program like lmms, but you need to understand the theory behind it.

There are other ways, but although I am poor at playing a keyboard, it still makes it for me allot easier, to produce a melody that way, and record that into lmms.
Ones in lmms, I can clean so to say the mess up. Adjust the volume of notes, I did not play loud enough, and correct some timing because I was to fast or to slow while playing.

Try to correct what you played, not too much though, most music will sound better if not all notes are exactly the same volume.
Its nice too have a bit of variation, with the one count played a bit louder for example.

The keyboard, is also helping me to understand sheet music.
