It's possible to drag the right side border of the mixer window to expand for more tracks, but I have often wished when I'm mixing that I could drag the bottom/top border down/up so that I can have more space and fine control of the levels. This could also allow for more access to the fx stack negating the need to scroll.

No

Would not work, it would be sketchy. Vertical Scaling has been purposely removed!
But You can finely move a focussed slider, by scrolling your mouse. The movement is on 1. decimal!
You can even double-click the slider and manually write a value for the position.
Sorry to butt in, but why would it be sketchy? It only needs a recalibration on window resize surely?

I only ask because I have another reason this would be desirable: channel names longer than about 10 characters are truncated, so I have to use abbreviations more than I'd like.

Granted, it's a small thing and maybe not worth the effort needed to let the window be resized, and actually I don't know, maybe there's a tooltip that shows the entire channel name on hover - if not then that would resolve my issue at least!

HEHe.. That 'feature' has been specifically removed! It is pr design that mixer cant be scaled vertically. The reason is that you wont get finer control of a slider, just by scaling, you have exact the same granulating of the slider, it will just 'jump' instead of slide.
