The project is not dead. The developers are working on it and if you go on the download page there are nightly downloads which are improved since 3 years ago. It is a slow but well defined work from some amazing developers doing it in their free time.

I am very glad they are still working on it, it has major potential, especially since they added the ability to use scala scl music scale files in the newest nightly version. LMMS is the only totally free and open source DAW available now, the free Cakewalk by Bandlab DAW is being discontinued in favour of a paid version, Ardour is open source but it is not able at this time to export midi files and you have to pay for a windows binary, unless you can find a third party build elsewhere. Tracktion Waveform is available in a free edition but it is a stripped down version. LMMS is totally free, open source and fully funtional and it is the only DAW that is.
