What type of audio-file do you try to load?
Atm MP3 is not Supported
Supported are:
* wave
* ogg
* ds
* flac

That sounds as if you have 'something' that appears as a soundfile, but is in fact not.
Windows will attempt to sort files when browsing folders. A 'masked thing' could interfere with that process, even a damaged file may.
If you have VLC player, you can securely add all your soundfiles to a list, and VLC will test all for integrity/ sanity, and warn you if it finds a rogue/ damaged file. If any is found, delete it
VLC is free
thanks

:o
oddd..
Did you build from source yourself?
1.2.2 AppImage from lmms.io is not generally having that issue afaik (i am on windows, but have build of a virtual mint..
If push comes to shove i think you should uninstall, get a new clean pack, and retry.. But this is odd if you use off 1.2.2 appImage
( 1.3 is actually really solid -It could be an alternative
Stay away from Nightly! It is not for production only tests!
just downloaded appimage, marked as executable the loaded
i tried with alpha release, same issue
maybe caused by Mint ? How can i trace or see logs ?

You need to ask in a Mint forum. I will alter your headline and see if a linux expert chimes in
