So l'm a semi-fan of Jazz. I don't always listen to it but when I do I get really into it, and I'm a particularly big fan of Coltrane. Anyone who knows their jazz history knows that his later stuff was very controversial. Ascension is an album that's just an hour and a half of some of the most chaotic freeform jazz you can find. When I listen to it, part of my brain is yelling that it's objectively terrible, yet another part of me finds it wierdly soothing, particularly when my mind is filled to the brim with anxious thoughts and I'm just exhausted. What's anyone else's experience with this? Why did Trane go this direction in his later years? And most importantly, am I onto something or am I just crazy?
