Why is trance so unpopular in the younger generation?

Share and discuss your LMMS music projects here, and see what people think!

Spend five minutes at Luminosity and you’ll immediately realise the older demographic of the trance scene.
Even with techno, house, hardstyle and EDM in general booming, trance remains a shadow of its former popularity among the youth. This begs several questions:
Why is trance so unpopular among the youth despite other electronic music genres booming?
How can the trance scene make a comeback among the youth?
Is the number of “old heads” in the trance scene part of the problem? Does this lead to a fixation on the classics and a rejection of “newer” sounds such as hard trance?

Its been like that forever. The new generation laughs at the previous generations music. In a few years Trance will be revived, and everybody from Gen-X will LoUvE Trance.
It could also be argued that some House, and especially Tecno-genres like Melodic-tecno is close to be trance-like, and is bridging the gap.
In here old-fashion Trance is very welcome and liked, so do not fear that your Trance project wont get likes!

Just an educated guess, but what I believe is happening is that trance doesnt fit the lifestyle of todays generations regarding consuming content. People nowadays are always in a rush (even if they dont need to) and their goal is to nomnom as much music as they can as quickly as they can.
Trance is originally about slow progressions, basically storytelling thru pure emotions, which only works if you let everything wait for its time, often making trance tracks 8 minutes long or even more.
And since nobody seems to have time anymore, they often just skip your track if the hook doesnt happen in the first 20 seconds.
What I can observe is that trance has become an "alternative" genre almost like classical music in a way. You can still reach the wider audience by diluding trance in something more popular, but otherwise i think we just simply got overshadowed by new genres that are more optimized for the listening habits of today's young people.

the rhythm of life is important for choosing preferences

25 years ago, a book and some early internet videos came out about "the Paradox of Choice". The whole book is about the fact that most people don't like having too many choices : it paralyzes them. Today, we live in that "bubble of choices". Too many content. People watch "TV" while they browse their tablets. It's crazy/

I was educated far differently. We had TV but my father had a super 8 "home cinema". He had like 40 short films (including star wars summed up in 20 minutes lol). You know what ? We craved watching every month or so all the stuff we had already seen 15 times at least in the year. We enjoyed the repetition, watching again what made us laugh already, a bit like I also enjoyed my father telling me always the same story (well crafted) before sleeping when I was 5. This was a kind of a ritual.

Always new stuff does not bring joy : it brings addiction, but no joy.

So, yeah, I dunno much about Trance, but I guess it is a progressive stuff and that you let go in it and then the brain is going along the ride.

It's not unpopular , check out Electric Callboy .

not popular I think so too

You are right, I agree with you.

I am a GEN Z probally advanced musician, and i was agreed with this topic.

In my experience i just discovered trance when i started making music with my first DAW which is still LMMS, now i liked trance, but it looks like its a little hard for me making it, it looks like and somehow my music mentallity doesn't want to make trance and i just try to make it because... (i am flash game fanatic player) and almost some flash games have trance too for their soundtracks, so why not make a trance soundtrack? it doesn't, not even making music theory, but i like it, probally one day i'll make it.

Now in my experience from the GEN Z society or comunity in the internet, its bizarre, i show music with some of my school mates or sometimes with my old friends, but it looks like their tastes are so different than i know before, they hear more music like metamorfosis, some with goofy ahh music, too much trap and reggaeton, with my mexican mates a lot of corridos tumbaos, yeah it looks like, bizarre troll face trend music, its so surreal to be honest lol, but i didn't like those, those look pretty much bizarre.
Also almost of my GEN Z comunity just use a lot tiktok, which for my opinion is full trash, a lot of missinformation in there, full brainrots and a lot of bizarre content, its the future for my GEN Z, yeah, do you think that? it doesn't like your/our future thinking at all.
At least if only the most of my new generation just doesn't use tiktok... it would be different, worse or better.
What it would happen in the future? is full unknown.

(Note: Not negative at all my GEN Z and new generations, theres some of people that doesn't fall in this, and i saw they are pretty much cool than others in a nustell, give them a change, they just decide how it would be the future).
