I'm really happy with this tutorial. It's all using free plugins and the author really emphasizes the freedom of creative options without it becoming overwhelming. Personally, this style gives me ideas of a different workflows.
LMMS is still capable for ambient use, as it can interact with effects.
Naturally, you don't need to use reverb to create a pad, if you just experiment with longer ADSR times ( especially (A)ttack and (R)elease ).
