Yep, all there. It's very WYSIWYG.

They're not that complicated though. The waveshaper takes a signal and modifies the waveshape based on the graph you draw, you can pretty much just learn it by fooling around. The Dynamics Processor is a bit more complex, it modifies the dynamics of the signal (like a compressor would) based on the graph. In sound quality I'm sure it won't come close to the proaudio compressors available on Linux, but maybe it'll get there some day...

Well, as a beginner I'm interested in getting simpler tools first, so these two are very welcome! If I understand correctly, compression means that you "level" instruments to same volume in a composition with minimal loss of quality? That is actually very cool, I have several ambient sources which are difficult to use with other instruments.

Compression can be used for leveling, but often it's also used to maximize the volume of a channel or an entire song, without causing the loud parts to clip. Limiters are also used for this, but they're really just a special type of compressor.

You can practice compressor usage with the LADSPA plugins included with LMMS. SC4 and Calf compressor are pretty good ones.

I have 0.4.15 installed (this is Linux) and working well.

Can 0.9.91 be compiled to a user directory and tested so that existing (0.4.15) configuration is not changed?

Yes it can, but there are some potential problems: both installations will use the same settings file, and thus after you install, you have to go to the settings and set the theme directory to the new version's theme, otherwise some UI things will not work (some knobs will act funny, mixer knobs go wonky etc.)

Then if you want to use the old version again, you'll probably have to switch the theme back to the old version...

This would then create the same kind of situation as with certain distros, where they have to make two separate ISOs available, one with patent-encumbered codes, one without... we'd need to have two windows versions of each release - one for swpat countries, one for the rest of the world. And multiply that again for 32/64 bit, that'd make 4 windows binaries for each release.

I mean country should not matter for this particular idea.

ima. if you 'just' install 0.9.1 in a different dir. then dont post 'bugs'. you should really remove everything lmms completely, if you want to bug-test, before you install the p.r. If you just like to fool around for fun, np :p

No musikbear, that only applies to windows versions. On Linux, it's entirely possible to have multiple installations of LMMS without them causing problems with each other (apart from the settings thing). I have 4...

Not about artistic things, it's about software patents, which are a horrible atrocity and a crime against humanity.
