Newbie's experiences part II

Not as such, no. The outputs above the first one simply won't work. LMMS reads only from the first stereo output, and if there are more output channels they get ignored.

I've also had poor luck with drum synths for some reason. It may be that many of them use some less known VST feature that isn't supported by the reverse-engineered VST support in LMMS... or something. Who knows, really.

Optik is a good one that works flawlessly, which I can recommend. There's also this huge cache of samples recorded from drum machines, here: http://warbeats.com/Community/Forums/aft/57
...and yes, Beat and Bassline Editor works and is very usable, but I want to *play* with strange drumsets....
Strange drumsets? Here you go!

Optik works for me too. Also, there's other free one named Grizzly which works.

Actually pretty funny soundfont, thanks!

Arpeggiators are other difficult class of VSTs, they seem to have a need to connect to other VSTs which seems to be not supported by VeSTige.

But I'm pretty surprised so much already works! There's a lot functionality in LMMS itself, LADSPA and VSTs give much more, and with added things like soundfonts and samples, there is not much LMMS can't do.

MIDI VST's are a no-go.

You can get a VST with a builtin arpeggiator, or you can use LMMS's own arpeggiator which should work with all instruments and should be enough for most needs.

Good to know, but sample-based instruments aren't very interesting to me (unless they do something fancy with them). LMMS already has quite powerful enough ways to play samples, and external plugins (especially ones running under wine) always take a bit more resources (more overhead thanks to all the compatibility cruft) so they should bring something to the table which isn't already possible with the native tools.

Btw, since we're talking about drums, ZynAddSubFX can produce awesome drum sounds. It takes a fair bit of work and the interface may feel a bit overwhelming at first, but if you keep at it, you'll discover there's pretty much nothing you can't do with it. There's an unfortunate bug that causes Zyn to only output 44.1k sound, like some VST's, but I'm hoping that gets fixed soon.
Bump! 8-)
