I made an observation, maybe it can help to solve the problem.

To shortly recall the problem: after a while of using LMMS it stopped to load VSTs. Always the same error message that the VST could not be loaded for some reason.

Now I found 2 VSTs which load without any problem: 4Front Piano x64 and 4Front bass x64.
Interestingly however, the 4Front Piano (without x64) does not work!

I have the feeling that a solution is not far right now.

4Front piano.dll does not work at all.

4Front piano x64.dll works perfectly.

(win 7, 64bit)

Any problem of finding the file can be excluded.
What is the difference how LMMS processes these 2 VSTs?

I think I'm gonna check this out, on my LMMS 64 Bit and see if it happens to me too. Hmmmmmmmmmmmm............
By the way, this happens to me with Mda Talkbox. When you save your LMMS file, then reopen it later. You get no sound when you press play, in both Beat and Bass editor and Sound Editor............. Especially if you made a robotic voice with Mda talk box.

Solution: You have to reload Mda talk box and start over again. Very tiring.

I'm sorry to necro this old thread, but I'm having this specific problem as well. When I attempt to open up a project I had previously saved that contains VSTs, LMMS does not tell me anything is wrong, but all VST instruments and any instruments with VST effects on them are silent, and the GUIs for those VSTs will not pop up when I try to open them. it's becoming quite a nuisance and I was wondering if anyone has found a universal workaround for it, since it's a huge strain on my workflow.

Nah, it's okay. That's why these threads are made. So that people with similar problems can post them.

After many months of using Lmms, I have learned, from experience and from other Lmms users, that "3rd Party Vst's and Lmms don't work well with each other, all the time."

Probably because of a bug in Lmms, a bug in the Vst's, or probably Bugs in both.
Or,............in some cases, some Vst's versions are not compatable with Lmms 0.4.13........."YET."

Don't worry,.......New version of Lmms 0.4.14 is in the works. You'll find people on the forums talking a bit about it, especially the testers for the RC version.
It seems 3rd party Vst's work a bit better in the Lmms 0.4.14 RC version.

Note: The current 0.4.14 is a "release Candidate,.... AKA RC" version made for "testing," purposes only.

lmms version
OS installed

Did these vsts work before you saved the project? -eg did the project work as intended earlier?

What is the name of the Vst you are using?

Thank you for your replies, it's heartening to know LMMS is still being worked on. The VSTs all work fine before I close and reopen LMMS. I'm running the latest LMMS on Windows 7. VSTs I use that have this problem include Piano One, Poulin Legion, Redshift Pickup replace, and pretty much anything else not on the approved list.

if i understand you correct, your project can work with vsts on the aproved list?
Then im afraid the problem is in the build-type of the vst.
Vsts are unfortunately not uniformly build, and thats the reason for a lot of grief, not only in lmms. The build-form depends on build-kit and basic-model. That said, The number of lmms supported vsts are pretty high, and it will grow, because yet one more variant-build will be supported. RC1 already suport variant2.

I suffer from the same vst problem. Running xp 32bit. It happened with piano one, which is suppose to have a very small footprint. The program became unresponsive. Wound up uninstalling piano one. But - Any file with a vst takes much longer to load.
