Apologies for such a late response. I spoke with my father about the issue and he suggested that the program might just not be compatible with my computer. I've stopped trying to troubleshoot the issue, and have given up. I think he's right.

Not so. LMMS is fully compatible with Windows 8.1. Many many 1000'th uses that
