I definitely have to agree with that Wiki article.
Pads can really get addicting to make. I know that, from personal experience. Lol!

I'll give some easy to hear examples, of Ethereal and Ambient Pads.

4:07 secs to 4:16 secs you hear the pad clearly and is audible to 4:30 secs.
It plays in the background throughout the music track.
Oh this song has nice vocals too.

In the First music track, from 1 secs to 22 secs, you can hear it clearly, and it plays throughout the track.
I love this variation used in this Ascension music track.

Track 4: From 8:52 secs to 9:53 secs
You can hear Ethereal/ambient Pads playing as the singer sings:
"Here,....is a photograph, what do you see?............Sorry it's just me."

Note: If you notice, Pads give a background fullness, and wholesome fullness to a music track, especially in Trance music.
It also does alot of other cool stuff too, and adds to the sounds and synth sound melodies, used in your music track too.

It is also called Ambient pads and Ethereal pads.

yop thats what pads are, but open your zasfx folder, and you have a number of pads
(think thers some in collections too)
But the thing is - It is not meant to sound as a pad in house :P
I bet you have heard the housepad sound, it is a bass!
You sidechain with kick, so it dips when the kick uses the frequencies, and then the pad comes through as a pumping driving bass!

then the difference is heard from 1:05 where the pad plays normally, but at 1:20 it goes sidechained, and make that pumping
