Plugins etc only producing white noise

Having trouble with LMMS? Ask about it here.

I wish i knew more about the jungle that is linux, but i am pretty much stumped of. The kxStudio pack should have worked according to gps
I have raised your probelm in the dev-group, so i hope some linux wizard will chime in soon, though
Thanks musikbear - appreciate your help.

I will probably be shifting to an alternative Linux distro (although very similar). It's possible that either the move, or reinstalling into a nice fresh environment will fix it. Will post back here once I've tried that.
AdrianHiggs wrote:Hi all.

I'm just starting out with LMMS and have run into an issue: several of the instrument plugins, presets and samples work fine for a minute or two, but then simply produce white noise - taking many of the others with them. Well, not proper white noise - it varies from plugin to plugin etc, but white-ish noise...

Restarting LMMS sorts the issue, until it strikes again, usually pretty soon.
Um,.......just by chance, do you have any weird symbols in the Settings menu options?
eg. % # * @ etc.
Especially in the folder paths?
If so, then remove them. :)
Only single slash symbols are supposed to be there.

Re edit:
Also, after making changes in the settings menu, close Lmms then, restart Lmms.
So that the changes will have effect.

From what I know, that might be what is causing, alot of the weird sound problems in Lmms.
Hey Brandy. Thanks. Just checked, though, and all looks hunkydory on that front.

I did change the working directory from lmms to .lmms_wkg_dir (because I didn't want a visible directory cluttering up my home directory). I suppose maybe LMMS doesn't like using a hidden directory as its working directory. I'll experiment a bit with that...

EDIT: OK. This is too weird. Tried it one more time and it seems absolutely fine now. So odd. OK, I'll play with it for a bit and see if it fails again.

Okay. Nice.

Also, I forgot to mention:

So that the changes in the settings menu will have effect.

Okay. Tell us how it goes from there. :)

@ Musicbear. Now you know why many Linux users like me, have said: I wish all those dev worked together, on one awesome distro, instead of creating mutiple.

Windows and Linux both have a kernel with on top of that the software we use. ( the interface we click on)
To be precise the kernel is called Linux, the stuff on top is called mint ubuntu openSUSE, Arch, fedora and so on.

This has an advantage though, its one reason why writing a virus that can take down all linux versions much more complicated.

@ AdrianHiggs, that is possible, or you have some hardware, which is not supported.

I do not know you're distro, but one thing I like about openSUSE, if I installed something through yast it will tell me if there is something missing, or conflicting.

Can I ask why you did not go with one of the more mainstream distro's ? The advantage of a bigger user base and a forum is that you are more likely to get help, with problem like these.

Its been reported that having Messenger or icq like programs running simultaneously with ALSA can create distortions in LMMS. I incidentally fell over that old info, and just like to ask if that could be a part of your problem too. f indeed some weirdness exists, between icq-like proggies and LMMS then i would think that it is pure and simple 'resouse-fighting', and that difference priority settings could be a solution, that could on the other hand also make it worse!
But then the 'solution' especially for low-end systems (not yours) would be not to use the net at all, when working with LMMS.
GPS, Musikbear - thanks.

It's not a messaging application in my case as I don't use them. I did wonder about other applications possibly somehow causing issues, though, so assuming the issue doesn't go away when I revert to a more mainstream distro, I'll experiment with running LMMS and nothing else. I can even try setting up a special user for LMMS without unnecessary services running (Bluetooth, for example).

I'll be reverting to Ubuntu in the next few days - better support etc is bang on.

Thanks again, everyone. I'll post back when I have more news.
