Yep, Steve, if I ignore the time signature I can actually write unstructured music in the piano roll. But what about the beat+bassline editor. My bass lines are unmeasured as well. I beat the drums especially on stressed syllables of the voice track and sometimes multiple beats to underline some passages. That's the use I make of percussions, it is rather unmeasured as well

It's not a question of IGNORING the time sig it's important that you set it to 1/something so it's not so much a time sig as just a pulse/tempo marker.

The only real point of using the BBE is because you want bar-structured looping. Since that's not what you want then what's stopping you simply using piano roll directly in Song Editor for percussion and bass instruments exactly as you do for melody lines ? That's what I usually end up doing when I'm playing with (fairly unstructured) early music.

But provided you keep the time signature as 1/something you can always use piano roll in BBE and get a sort of variable length looping going. You can set up a phrase that's say 17 quarter notes long and drop it into Song Editor wherever you need it. Then set up another BBE entry with 13 quarter notes and use that when you need etc.

Since what you're looking for is lack of structure LMMS can't really HELP. It can let you put notes where and when you want but what you're doing is so far away from the norm that you do have to put a bit of thought into how you use it .

The grid can be customized to the same color as the piano-roll background and with Q at 1/192 you would never know that there is a set Q. You do have to know CSS scripting, and you do need at real CSS-editor. If you have neither, i can make a .css for you.

BBtracks can open in piano-roll as well, so there is no difference

Tried that. It has measures and if your music isn't exactly measured, the bars representing notes do not align to the grid, making it very difficult to add and edit notes with a precise relative length.

I got it... There is no good GUI to write unmeasured music. Either I do it from the command line (e.g. midge) or I develop my own simple GUI. But I think I better just play and record/mix in analog, which sounds better after all

it looks like programming language but all sequencers use just array of data for note events with fixed timings
so it impossible while sequencer will not suport some kind of programming for note events

you can only render your final track of unmeasured, unstructured music to midi format and then import to lmms for render to audio.

As i said, the grid is just 'lines' and they can be removed in css :geek:

Musescore does not seem to support what I want, which in Italian we call "tempo libero", that is "free time". If I hide bars, will I still be able to set arbitrary repeting points, e.g. not starting or ending at a vertical bar?
