pop corn troubles

I already started on a blue Monday cover.

It started out of frustration over pop corn.

The start of the 12 inch version is rather simple. I got it done in 10 minutes, the start is not 100% right, I am missing one clap, still it sounds better then anything I did before.

Allot is confusing me too.
About every popcorn version, I see in synthesia uses different octaves.

But they all sound fine, unlike mine.

There must be some music basics I am over looking. Something about a relation between tracks.
The start of blue monday is now fixed, and right.

When I was checking the main lead of popcorn, I found out it cant be dorian, its minor.

I know realize were I messed up.

I had changed notes because the were out of scale.

Big mistake in this case, it was not the scale that was the problem.

:D Finally the lead sounds right to me. It did not with the dorian scale.
Its shocking to me, how just changing a few notes, makes such a difference even to my ears.

Now I am gonna attack the subleads.
Minor scale does not fit, but I will make sure first, I used the right notes.
Minor update. ( pun intended )

It seems that the sub leads are Mixolydisch.

Subleads now should have the right tone, but the timing is not right yet.

Making progress :)

Make that minor and Dorian.

The parts I have finished sound good, at least to my ears.

Funny is a sub lead were, I listened and changed one note, which is different form the you tube vid, but sounds much better.
It has to do with the previous notes and the difference between them.

The last you tube vid I used, has not the right sub lead.
Its different, in timing from the mp3 I have. ( Hot butter - Popcorn )

I am now using a sublead I created earlier, which in timing is at least close to perfect, but I am using the tone height, from the last vid.

Futher more, I am under the impression my musical hearing is improving.
More and more I am starting to hear mistakes without paying attention to the scale.
The scale however usual does confirm the mistakes.

Thank god, for being to stubborn to quit ?
After praying for courage, I uploaded the latest version.

There are no drums yet, but I first would like to know if I am making progress.

After fighting and struggling with the default synths from LMMS, I caved in and used a vst.
Synth 1 to the rescue ?

The first track after the "flute" is the triple ossilator.
About every thing else is synth 1.

I like two things about synth 1.
One is the sound, and secondly, I found an incredible amount of soundbanks.

*Hits submit and hides* ;)
I still refuse to give up.

I downloaded a pop corn midi file.

Then I noticed something very interesting.

My popcorn rhythm, is the same through out the entire song.

When I start my song, and the converted mp3, it all sounds fine until a bit further in the song.
I now have figured out why.

The popcorn main tune, first 14 notes, rhythm stays the same, but then it changes, until the same part (see picture), comes along.

Another lesson learned, if my ears tell me its not perfect, I should trust them.
If we look at the picture there is no pause between most notes, but there is between the first and second 7 notes.

The melody after this, the next 15 notes, does not have pauses.
And that's exactly were my rhythm starts to sound wrong.

I hope this will help other people new to making music too.
Wow! :o
You're really dedicated to making that Popcorn song huh?
Nice.
I've been reading your progress notes too. :D
Its not, I like that song so much, but I am probably to stubborn to quit.

I can't stand it, I can't make it sound right yet.

Watching a lot of vids, ( how to play what ever ) does help, and looking at other people's lmms projects.

I am starting to see patterns. Mostly about the relation between tracks ( instruments )
I still seem to be to stubborn to quit. :)

I had this problem with my subleads. They had an very annoying, whining sound.

Playing these sub leads at the same key as the rhythm though

That's one problem down.

Now I have figured out what was wrong, the song still sounds bad, but its progress anyway.

A different problem I have not tackled yet, is the difference between my popcorn version, and about all of the other covers.

The music instrument of all the covers, sound like they belong together.
I have not figured out exactly how to do this, in my version.

I never had this issue when I made my first ( dance ) track with lmms, but got some help on tuning synths.

The main reason why I do not want to give up, the problems I am having with this pop corn song, have almost nothing to do with lmms.
But have to do with me knowing little about music.
I do find it surprising, that trying to copy a song is far harder, then creating your own song.

My musical hearing might be improving too.
The next vid made me smile. I am not the only one hitting false notes ;)
He does a pretty good job, although even when New order performs this song, there is not that much human input. ;)
