This might make some more experienced musicians smile, a nice example of how my musical hearing (understanding) keeps improving.

Living on Video - Trans X
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b9xBAtCsCTQ

How many times have I listened to this song? It's in my 14 gig playlist.
I love it, although I don't think it will score much points from a musical point of view.

At 0.19 m, a syncopated "melody"

I never noticed before that this part of the melody does not play single notes, but does syncopation :o

Since I understand syncopation, I hear (recognize) it a lot in pop music.

And I am pretty sure that bassline is syncopated too, but my ears had picked up on that before I knew what syncopation was. :)
Just for interest...what do you understand syncopation to be ? Because I don't think I can hear any at 0.19 in that video.

Steve
The way I understand syncopation, is a series of notes, like c3 c4 c3 c4, f3, f4, f3,f4 .... ( does not have to be an octave)

That's what I think I hear in that melody starting at .19 sec ?

Trans X - Living On Video 2012

At 0.49 and on, you can see him play it.

Up down up down up down ? I thought that is syncopation :)

Ooooh. After listening to it, now I understand, what you and others mean by syncopated melody.
I never knew, that was the term, used for arp notes, like that.
That melody is nice though. :)

Yes it is. It plays in a similar fashion.
Ah that would explain it. Back when I was learning music syncopation was a change in rhythm made by accenting different beats from the normal ones. If it's now used to mean alternating notes then I'm just out of touch (again ;)).

Steve
I think its more likely I don't understand syncopation yet :P

It seems you're right, and I will have to read more on syncopation.

This vid seems to help me. The accent is not on 1 and 3 but on 2 and 4 if I get this right.

So its not as easy as I thought , and its about a change in the rhythm. Reggae is syncopated :o

I am for some part confused lol.
Yep, reggae is syncopated, particularly since not everything hits on 2 and 4. The bass lines are really syncopated. And just about everything in funk is seriously syncopated.

So at least you're understanding what you're hearing (the alternating notes), you're just perhaps not using the right word to describe it. But the point is that your musical hearing is much improved and is working fine.

Steve
Exactly, and I realize why I got a bit confused. Syncopation is not just about alternating notes ( it can be ), but the timing is what makes something syncopation or not.

And that's why that one bass line I made is syncopated.
It goes up down, up down, but more important the down notes are at 2 and 4 the up notes at 1 and 3.

Its funny though, listening for over 30 ? years to living on video, and only now notice these alternating notes. :P

Time for a question though.
Enola Gay is that syncopated or not ?

If I understand the midi file I saw right, it is.

The tune that starts at 0.07

Correct.
Syncopation is extremely important in EDM. Especially innovations by Guetta, Aviici, DeadMouse and Basshunter. -Especially Basshunter, because he made a completely new bassline, with 'in-betweeners' notes, but historically syncopation is synonym with one genre Jazz!
Jazz invented syncopation, and it was the ONE thing that really made jazz into ..jazz :p Evenly important: Syncopation was the one thing that derogatorily denoted jazz as Primitive and even minted the phrase N.....music!
Jazz syncopation was deemed provocative and unmoral, Was even acused for 'leading young people astray' Sexually and was deemed 'music of the devil'
Guess by WHO?
(No prices.. :P
It is absolute on the button that you mention Reggae! Because reggae takes african rhythms and work on the in-be-tweeners -Funnily, that got us right back to EDM :P

I know what those step-wise often fast note changes are called in danish, we call them 'Triller', which would mean ' 'roll' ' if google are right.., 'We' also say playing 'step-wise'.
Interesting :)

About the N.... music. I never gave a shit about the artist playing it, I liked it or I did not like it.

If we look at my play list I might be a black gay person and a hippie. LOL.

Music wise I have been wondering if I have black blood in me.
How can some white people sit still when listening to music, and how do they manage to not even ones clap on time is beyond me. :P

Still I am white person, but music wise always been drawn to black music too.

It always makes me smile I own an elpee of Public Enemy - fear of a Black Planet.

Leaving young people astray sound so familiar. I think I saw it in a documentary.
Reminds me of discussion related to Rock and Roll. more music from the devil.

Don't think I have a clue on who said it though.
