Made some progress,
That cowbell is the 808 cowbell.
An 808 rim hit ? is also used. Prob also the kick, but the 808 or 908 kick in lmms, do not sound entirely as the jam on it kick.
Cowbell en rim do. Need to do more listening, I think more 808 sounds are used.

Edit, they definitely used an 808 kick, and I am 99% sure its layered somehow.
Found another you tube vid. Sound good and different from most you tube vids. This one will prob help me too.
Two 7" version, b side an instrumental.

I sometimes love the internet, its always fun to see other nut cases just like me. :)

This guy also has a series of hip hop samples.

I am starting to see why I struggle so much with jam on it.
Its syncopated like hell, like it should be for funk, but this makes it for me real hard though to even figure were the 1 of the 1 2 3 4 is.
I already have this problem with music much less syncopated.

First vid in this post before and after 6.40 is doing my head in.

How to get those two basslines lined up. At the moment both start at 1, and sound right when played together with original.
But I cant seem to get them lined up together right.
Tried to do some Funk.

Totally intuitive improvisation, really fitting this topic I think.

Funny how I try to get away from the 1 2 3 4 but the drums sometimes catch me. I think we can hear this.

It does not fit any scale, as I said I cant play, but my sense of rhythm is not bad.

I seem to fail horrible at getting certain melodies into lmms with the mouse.
Recording my self playing, and then putting it i scale, and correcting velocity a bit, seems the way to go forward.
This method, also helps me to cover jam on it. I don't have a clue on how long the notes are, but when I play along, I find the answer.

Back to my Funk attempt. ( I think there are a few edm? hit basslines in it ;) )

Recorded with piano roll set to 1/16 I think.
I had hoped to release my hip hop mix this week, but that was too optimistic.

After listening again to jam on it the instrumental version multiple times, I found my mistake. There are at least 4, 808 parts. All 4 have a slightly different pattern, not the same as I was expecting.

I hope to make progress tomorrow with my new cpu cooler in place.
Old cpu cooler was noisy indicating it is worn.

People not interesting in pc's, can stop reading here.

Yesterday replaced the stock cooler, but some thing happened. :(
While dusting off the old plastic bracket, with a soft brush I heard ping. :o

For the technical people under us, that typical sound when something under tension snaps.
Probably because of the heating and cooling down of the pc, the bracket gets de formed over time. ( 5 years)
It can how ever not move because of 4 screws and a backplate keeping it in place.

Removing the old cooler was the end for the bracket in the picture,

I was very worried I had to buy a new mobo, but learned they can be bought separately.
I was clearly not the first person to have this problem.

Tip If you're gonna replace the cooler on an amd cpu, also get a new bracket.
This bracket is used with most or maybe even all amd cpu.

Was it worth it ?
CPU temp is now 10 degrees lower :) This cooler is doing much better then the amd stock cooler.

I can recommend this fan. ( for most intel and amd sockets )

There is an even better one, but that one is 165 mm high. That wont fit in most cases.
( it might fit in mine tough, but to be safe I went for this one, 135 mm high )

AMD phenom II X4 at stock 3.2 Ghz, while I am typing this, 35 C :D
I got a tip on the Linux musicians forum, I like to share with you guys.

Sonic visualiser

Linux Windows and Mac version.

Edit:

I have the program installed, but it cant do much more the audacity on a first glance, but with the vamp plugins it should get interesting.

Found this.

He claims the sound I am after is the 303.

You can always rely on the internet to find totally contracting info. :P
Too bad about the pc issues, but you got it fixed :)
The visualizer looks just like audacity's various settings. -interesting, perhaps that one could be an option for SPAN for those who yet not have a visualizer, .
Perhaps we should have a thread here for plugin-tips..

Your funk should have grooves im pretty sure that a funk score would have several rests within the punchy notes.
Groves are so important in jazz
I installed the program from an openSUSE source and it seems to work but it does not read mp3.
This does not surprise me, so I might have to compile it myself.

Any software you get from openSUSE is opensource.
To keep this short, mp3 is not opensource.

Packman does not seem to have this program, but I will do some more searching.

I cant find much info but those vamp plugins might / should work with audacity too.

The one I am interested in is the one of which they claim it will show a piano roll like pattern of any notes of the piece of music you give it.

I did find another instrumental version of jam on it. Its worth mentioning because it has a part were you only hear the sound I am after.
With my midi keyboard hooked up, i tried to play along, just to find note lengths. It has to be 1/16 notes.
For now I have just C4 C5 C4 C5, and the speed seems right.

My sound however does not even come close.

6m05 just that sound. This should help me to reproduce it.
To me is sound like some thing high low, high low, high low.

I wonder if I should try it with different velocities like musicbear showed in that bass line vid.

From an interview with the newclues I cant really drawn a conclusion on what instrument makes that sound.
TB 303 is possible, because he tells they did also use the 303 for non bassline stuff. (they also had an 808 and two keyboards, and some more.)

Oh my goodness! Who could forget that classic bass sound + melody. That track = super cool!! 8-)
When you say, 6m05, is it the bass sound from 6:05 secs, that you're speaking of? :D

Yes the only sound I hear after 6.05 we could call it an accordeon sound. it might be an TB 303.

The bassline before this is a bassguitar and an 808 kick ( those parts I have recognized). but I suspect that they layered the 808 kick with something.

And some thing I learned from watching an interview.

This record is mend to make fun of rap, and scratching DJ's :P

The people from Newclues used to do DJ battles, but they did not scratch.
After one battle a guy came up the them and said !

Yeah you guys clearly won but you cant do wikki wikki wikki ( imitating the scratching )
