I hope it's okay to add this here because it recently came up on my radar and I wanted to link to it directly. The BBC symphony orchestra released this free vst that has a lot of great orchestral sounds.

On gitHub the project Libre-software has made a collection of audio-software projects
It is HUGE!

It can be difficult to find the vst-dlls
Look for links to 'Binaries' or 'Releases' or 'Archive'...
