And that's when you get to the confusing fact that there are three different minor keys, all called A minor. The one with all the white notes is Am natural. then there's Am harmonic with a G sharp instead of the G, and Am melodic with F sharp and G sharp but only when you're going down the scale.
One of my favourite bits of Bach (the E minor bouree) is in a melodic minor and it still sometimes confuses me even though I've been playing it off and on for at least 30 years.

Sometimes you can't help but think that these music people are just going out of their way to make things difficult for us mere mortals ;).

I am still not sure, if I want to kill or thank the guy, who invented the music system.

I am also not sure if trust my ears enough yet, but I am very happy to have learned (and still am) all the boring stuff.

It has helped me big time, to understand, recognize the things I hear.

To learn music you have to learn to rules, to make music you need to forget them.
All this stuff to get something which sounds nice. :P

I still have to think to find the c, on my midi controller, so I can totally see how someone could get confused, with bach. ;)

Made good progress on latest track. Not sure if what I do at around 5 minutes in, really is common in trance, but it seems to work for me.
Needs a bit more work, I have added some reverb, cloned a track, and changed on second one the filter setting for synth1.
I think I am finished. Do you guys agree ?

Hi guys
I need feedback. What to think of this. A blend of edm and reggae ?

I love some parts, but hose strings hmm ?
Then the melody hmm ?

Or am I done and should I just release ?

All feedback welcome, on composition and or mixing or what ever.

Bumping, really could use some feedback. :)
Well you did ask.

If you want it to sound like reggae the chop on 2 and 4 needs more bite and I'd have a proper reggae bassline in there least for some of the time. The bassline you're using is a bit too constant for my taste and certainly needs more mid-range to it. On my good system it sounds o.k. but I first played it just on laptop speakers and the bassline completely disappears. Do you test your final mixes on a variety of systems ? I've learnt to do that because ideally you want things to sound at least reasonable on tinny earbuds and cheap car speakers as well as on good headphones and hifi systems. OTOH my hearing isn't good these days so I've also learnt to test mixes on a variety of friends. Amazing how often they hear things I just miss.

The melody is pretty good but again a bit more bite (more treble perhaps) would pull it out of the mix better and maybe even switching it between different instruments would add interest ?

I'm not a big fan of strings anyway but they sound rather droning to me. I think I'd probably try shortening the notes and let some reverb carry them between chord changes to give a bit of variety in volume and/or maybe run them through a phaser to get some movement in them.

OTOH I'm currently playing with 13th and 14th century dance music so what do I know about all this modern stuff ;)?

Steve
Thank you :)

The problem I have with my friends, is that they like it or don't like it. In general no useful feedback there. (on how to improve)

Same goes for streamcloud, it seems that what ever I upload, there is almost always somebody who likes it, but again that's not helping me.
Although it might proof I am on the right track.

The strings, I am not happy with them, and will try the things you suggested,
I was even wondering about deleting them, but on the other had I like my blend ? of edm and reggae.

I only test ( mix) with the sennheiser headset I have. Maybe I should also listen to it on my mp3 player, but me as a sennheiser fan also has earbuds of the same brand. lol

Those earbuds lag real bass though, so it might be a good thing to try.

I hate (cheap) pc speakers, it was the main reason for me to get a decent headset.
I don't understand how people can listen to them, when listening to music.I only get irritated.

For years I have been saying that my ears are much better then my budget allows.
Can you maybe suggest a webpage about a more reggae like bassline ?
I will of course google myself, and see what I can come up with.

I have been trying to create reggae, and although I know the difference between ska and reggae, and other music, I fail horrible at making real reggae.
( I was not attempting to make real reggae though with this piece)

The part I understand about reggae is that's its not ONE, two three four.
But one Two, three Four or one, two three, FOUR. ( emphasis on the count in capitals) :P
About the melody, again thank you, its better then I thought. Switching between instruments sounds like an interesting idea.
Your on the right track, your chords, match your melodies well.
Your music has improved drastically over the last few months.
The best investment you can get is a pair of professional reference headphones.
Makes mixing, and editing your music so much better.
Thank you. I have not forgotten the headphone suggested through these boards. It might happen.
( it would prob have already happen, if the tax office, had kept their promise )

I love what my sennheiser game headset does to mp3, but that also makes it not so great for mixing.

A nice example is part of the feedback I get about the lag of bass in my creations.
On my headset the basses are their. LOL

I still remember the first time, I used this headset, with my collection of mp3. Suddenly their was bass in the mp3.
And I did not hear anymore, some distortion, for the high tones. ( prob an mp3 issue)
I found a page about reggae, and while reading it, I started to smile.
Now, in reggae it’s important to know that the rhythm revolves around the third beat – the third will be the most emphasised.
I already have this in lmms, but was thinking it was not right. I should trust my ears, because they said it was right. :D

And here we go about the 2 and 4 :
The Skank

3) The upbeat

In a bar of four beats we have two types of beat, the downbeat (beats 1 and 3), and the upbeat (beats 2 and 4). Most conventional music revolves around the downbeat, or all beats equally. In reggae the upbeat is quintessential.
